California vs. Stanford

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Interstat) – California meets Stanford for the fourth time in six days Tuesday, this time in the opening round of the Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Championship at Truist Field.

The Golden Bears (29-25 overall) are the designated visiting team, and the Cardinal (27-25 overall) are the home team. First pitch is scheduled for the afternoon, with the evening game also on the schedule; the exact time slot has not been determined. The forecast for game time is [temperature] degrees Fahrenheit.

Tuesday’s matchup is the latest chapter in a tightly contested season series. Stanford won the opener 7-6 on May 14, but California rallied for a 4-3 victory May 15 and a 2-1 win May 16. The Bears’ win Saturday was highlighted by a strong starting performance from right-hander Gavin Eddy, who went six innings, allowed five hits and one earned run and struck out five.

Eddy (5-3, 2.89 ERA) has been California’s most reliable starter in recent weeks. Over his last four outings, he has thrown 27 innings, allowed only two earned runs and struck out 36. He threw seven no-hit innings against Virginia on May 9, allowing one unearned run, and also pitched eight shutout innings at Miami on April 25, though he took the loss in both games. Eddy is expected to start Tuesday.

Stanford will counter with left-handed reliever Nick Dugan, who has served as a multi-inning arm out of the bullpen. Dugan (2-1, 4.50 ERA) threw three scoreless innings in the May 16 game at California, allowing no hits and striking out four. He has not started a game this season but has logged at least three innings in each of his last four appearances. In his most recent start-like outing against North Carolina State on May 10, he worked three innings, gave up four hits and two earned runs and earned the win.

The Cardinal’s offense has been inconsistent. In Thursday’s win, Stanford scored seven runs on 11 hits, but managed only one run in Friday’s loss and one run in Saturday’s loss. First baseman Teddy Tokheim went 2-for-3 with an RBI in Saturday’s defeat.

California, meanwhile, has won three of its last four games. The Bears’ bullpen has been effective; in Saturday’s win, Cole Clark and Ethan Foley combined for three scoreless innings of relief.

Interstat’s game simulator projects a 6-5 California victory.

The winner Tuesday advances to the double-elimination portion of the ACC tournament, while the loser faces an elimination game Wednesday.
