Holy Cross at Bucknell

LEWISBURG, Pa. (Interstat) — Ty Lagoni hit a two-run home run and finished with three RBIs, leading Bucknell to a 9-5 victory over Holy Cross on Tuesday afternoon at Eugene B. Depew Field.

The Bison trailed 5-1 entering the bottom of the seventh inning before erupting for six runs, four of them unearned, to seize control. Lagoni’s homer to left field tied the game at 5, and the rally continued with two more runs on a fielder’s choice and a walk with the bases loaded. Bucknell added two unearned runs in the eighth inning on a fielder’s choice and an error by the Holy Cross shortstop.

Holy Cross took an early lead in the third inning when Owen Stelzer doubled and scored on a triple by CJ Egrie, who then scored on a groundout. Braden Connors extended the lead with a two-run homer in the fourth inning, his third hit of the game. Connors finished 3 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs.

Lagoni went 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs. He also scored twice. The Bison shortstop has been a key contributor in the series; he went 1 for 3 in Monday’s loss.

Bucknell starter Brady Hoar pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowing seven hits and four earned runs with three strikeouts. Everett Garber earned the win in relief, tossing 3 1/3 innings and surrendering two hits and one earned run while striking out three. Hadley Maxwell closed the ninth inning, allowing one hit.

Holy Cross starter Jake Lenahan pitched six innings, allowing five earned runs on three hits with three strikeouts. He left with a 5-1 lead before the bullpen faltered. Marco Citro took the loss, allowing one unearned run in 1 1/3 innings.

CJ Egrie went 2 for 5 with an RBI and a run scored for the Crusaders. Owen Stelzer added two hits, including two doubles. Holy Cross had 10 hits in the game, matching Bucknell’s output.

The Crusaders dropped to 24-28 overall, while the Bison improved to 27-23. The two teams conclude their series Wednesday afternoon at the same venue.

Bucknell’s win avenged an 11-2 loss to Holy Cross on Monday and evened the season series at three wins apiece. Holy Cross had taken two of three in Lewisburg in April.

The turning point came in the seventh inning. After Lagoni’s game-tying homer, the Bison loaded the bases against reliever Henry Harding, who recorded only two outs while allowing two runs, both unearned. A walk and a fielder’s choice error extended the inning, and Bucknell never trailed again.

The Interstat game simulator had projected a 7-6 Holy Cross victory, while the Interstat ELO system gave Bucknell a 52.40 percent probability to win.
