Georgetown at Maryland
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (Interstat) — Paul Jones II hit three home runs and drove in 11 runs to lead Maryland to a 21-6 victory over Georgetown on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at Shipley Field.
The Terrapins (24-27) scored in every inning except the second and seventh, pounding out 12 hits while taking advantage of five Georgetown errors. The Hoyas (26-27) managed four hits and scored single runs in the first, fifth, sixth and seventh innings but never led after the bottom of the first.
Maryland trailed 1-0 after Georgetown scratched across an unearned run in the top of the first, but the Terrapins answered immediately. With two outs in the bottom half, Ryan Costello singled, David Mendez walked and Bud Coombs walked to load the bases. Jones then launched a grand slam to left-center field, giving Maryland a 4-1 lead.
The Hoyas cut the deficit to 4-1 after their first-inning run, but Maryland added four more in the third. Brayden Martin walked, Mendez singled and Coombs doubled to drive in Martin, making it 5-1. Jones followed with his second home run, a three-run shot to left field that pushed the lead to 8-1.
Georgetown got two runs back in the top of the fifth on a walk, a hit batter and a pair of walks that forced in runs, trimming the Maryland lead to 8-3. But the Terrapins answered with five runs in the bottom of the fifth. Costello walked with the bases loaded to force in a run, Mendez singled for another RBI, and Coombs doubled to drive in two more. Jones then walked to force in another run, and the inning ended with Maryland ahead 16-3.
The Hoyas scored once in the sixth on a walk, a single and a walk to make it 16-4, but Maryland put the game out of reach with five more in the bottom of the sixth. Mendez doubled in a run, and Jones capped his historic night with a grand slam to right field, his third home run of the game, giving the Terrapins a 21-4 lead.
Georgetown added two unearned runs in the top of the seventh on an error and a single by Christian Hamilton, but the comeback fell far short.
Jones finished 3 for 4 with three home runs and 11 RBIs, accounting for more than half of Maryland’s run production. Coombs went 3 for 3 with a home run, a double and six RBIs, while Mendez had three hits and two RBIs. Costello reached base three times and scored three runs.
Maryland used a parade of pitchers, with Brayden Ryan earning the win after pitching a scoreless second inning. Ryan allowed no hits and struck out two. Nic Morlang, Andrew Koshy, Austin Weiss, Jake Yeager and Ryan Bailey each threw an inning of relief, with Bailey the only one to allow an earned run. Ethan Rucker pitched two-thirds of a hitless inning for Georgetown, but the Hoyas’ pitching staff issued 10 walks and hit two batters.
Georgetown’s only extra-base hit was a single, and the Hoyas left 10 runners on base. The Terrapins’ defense turned two double plays.
The two teams met for the second time this season, having played April 28 at Georgetown, a game Maryland won 11-2. Maryland also defeated Georgetown 16-3 on Feb. 17 in College Park.
Maryland’s victory evened its record at 24-27, while Georgetown fell to 26-27.
