Georgetown at Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (Interstat) — The Georgetown Hoyas and Maryland Terrapins will meet Tuesday night in a nonconference matchup that carries added weight for two teams hovering near the .500 mark.

Georgetown (26-26) travels to Maryland (23-27) for the second meeting between the local rivals this season. The Terrapins won the previous matchup, 11-2, on April 28 in Washington. Maryland also won the teams’ only other meeting this year, 16-3 on Feb. 17.

The Hoyas enter the game on a high note after a 5-2 win Sunday at Creighton. Right-hander Max Whitmer earned the victory with three scoreless innings of relief, allowing no hits while striking out one. That outing continued a solid stretch for Whitmer, who has not allowed an earned run over his last 5 innings pitched, including a scoreless inning against Maryland on April 28.

For the season, Whitmer has been a reliable option out of the bullpen. In his most recent start against the Bluejays, he retired all nine batters he faced. The Hoyas have split their last 10 games and will face Seton Hall later this week.

Maryland snapped a four-game losing streak with an 11-7 win Sunday at Rutgers. Center fielder Bud Coombs drove in four runs, including a home run, going 1 for 2. Coombs has been streaky at the plate this season. He homered in three of his last four games, including a grand slam in a 23-11 win at Towson on May 5. However, he also went 0 for 3 in a loss to Rutgers on Saturday and has struggled in series against Michigan, going 1 for 12 in three games last weekend.

Coombs’ best game this season came against Georgetown, when he went 2 for 4 with an RBI in the 11-2 victory on April 28. He is expected to bat near the top of the order Tuesday.

First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Shipley Field. The game is part of a busy week for both teams, as Maryland opens a home series against Penn State on Thursday and Georgetown travels to Seton Hall for a three-game set starting Thursday.
