BYU at Arizona
TUCSON, Ariz. (Interstat) — Luc Fladda struck out 11 over 6 2/3 innings and Arizona’s offense backed him with timely hitting as the Wildcats shut out BYU 6-0 on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at Hi Corbett Field. The victory lifted Arizona to 16-24, while BYU fell to 20-20.
Fladda, who had struggled in his previous outing against Kansas State, allowed six hits and walked none while working out of early jams. He exited after striking out the side in the seventh, having thrown 103 pitches. Corey Kling came on to retire the final seven Cougars, striking out two and yielding one hit.
BYU starter Wayland Crane (5 IP, 3 ER, 3 K) kept the game scoreless through three innings, but Arizona broke through in the fourth. With two outs, a wild pitch moved runners to second and third, and Beau Sylvester lined a two-run single to right field that scored Daniel Danzeisen and Mike Cain.
The Wildcats added two more in the fifth, aided by a throwing error from Crane. After a double by Kade McEntire and a hit batsman, Crane’s errant throw on a pickoff attempt put both runners in scoring position. Danzeisen delivered an RBI single, and Nate Novitske followed with a run-scoring groundout that made it 4-0.
Arizona padded its lead in the sixth against reliever Justis Reiser. Sylvester led off with a single, moved to second on a groundout, and later scored on a two-run single by TJ Adams. Adams also plated Cash Brennan, who had reached on a fielder’s choice and stolen second. Adams was then picked off to end the inning.
Fladda’s command was sharp from the outset. He retired the side in order in the second and third, working around a double and single in the third by getting a groundout to escape. BYU’s best threat came in the seventh when, with one out, Evan Wolfgramm singled and Hayden Painter doubled to put runners at second and third. But Kling entered and induced a foul out and a strikeout to end the inning. Luke Anderson had two hits for BYU, while Sylvester and Adams each drove in two runs.
The Cougars will face Arizona again Friday in the second game of the three-game series.
