Navy at Holy Cross
WORCESTER, Mass. (Interstat) — Tyler Grenn and Tyler Cripe led a dominant performance as the Navy baseball team opened a Patriot League doubleheader with a 10-4 victory over Holy Cross on Friday.
The Midshipmen (24-14, 1-0 Patriot) scored early and often, racking up 12 hits, while Grenn and reliever Jackson Clark combined to allow just four hits and strike out 12 Crusaders batters.
Navy set the tone immediately against Holy Cross starter Pedro Leon. Cripe, the second batter of the game, launched a solo home run to right field. The Midshipmen then manufactured another run on an RBI single by Andrew Manning, a stolen base, and a failed pickoff attempt that allowed the runner to score.
Holy Cross (16-21, 0-1) answered in its half of the first. After a single by Alex Sandell, Ryan Grundy hit a two-run homer down the right-field line to cut the deficit to 2-0. That would be the only significant damage against Grenn, who was brilliant over six innings. The right-hander allowed no hits after the first-inning homer, finishing with two earned runs, seven strikeouts and three walks. He hit two batters.
Navy extended its lead to 3-0 in the second on an RBI single from Cripe that scored Jake Hooten, who had doubled. They added an unearned run in the third after Manning walked, advanced on a throwing error, and scored on a double by Chris Klug. That chased Leon, who was relieved by Jake Lenahan.
The most important sequence of the game came in the top of the seventh, after Navy had taken a 4-2 lead. Cripe led off with a single and scored on a triple by Victor Izquierdo. After an out, Patrick Walsh connected for a two-run homer to right field, pushing the advantage to 7-2 and effectively putting the game out of reach.
The Midshipmen capitalized on Holy Cross miscues for two unearned runs in the sixth and added their final run in the ninth on a bases-loaded walk by Will Howard.
Clark relieved Grenn to start the seventh and was nearly untouchable. Over three innings, he allowed one unearned run on no hits, striking out five and walking one. The Crusaders’ only run against him came in the ninth on an RBI single by Grundy, who finished 2 for 4 with three RBIs.
Cripe led Navy’s offense, going 3 for 4 with a home run, two RBIs, two runs scored and a stolen base. Walsh drove in two with his homer, and Izquierdo added an RBI triple.
Lenahan took the loss for Holy Cross, allowing three earned runs on five hits over 4 1/3 innings of relief. The Crusaders used five pitchers in the game, which was the opener of a three-game weekend series.
The victory improved Navy to 24-14 overall, while Holy Cross fell to 16-21. The teams were scheduled to conclude the doubleheader later Friday.
