Mississippi Valley State at Alcorn State
MONTGOMERY, Miss. (Interstat) — Isreal Ramos drove in six runs with two home runs, including a three-run shot in a decisive third inning, to power Mississippi Valley State to a 15-8 victory over Alcorn State on Wednesday in the first game of a Southwestern Athletic Conference doubleheader at Foster Baseball Field at McGowan Stadium.
The Delta Devils (9-17) erupted for seven runs in the third inning, capitalizing on an Alcorn State error to break open a scoreless game. The big blow came from Ramos, the right fielder, who launched a three-run homer to left-center field to cap the rally. He finished 3 for 5.
Mississippi Valley State sent 11 batters to the plate in the third. The inning began with two walks and a pitcher’s error on a pickoff attempt. Tom Early and Chris Soeder delivered run-scoring singles before Ramos cleared the bases with his first homer of the day, making it 7-0.
Ramos added a two-run homer in the second inning and an RBI single in the seventh. His performance anchored an offense that produced 10 hits but drew 13 walks and benefited from four Braves errors.
The most important sequence of the game was that seven-run third inning, which immediately followed Alcorn State loading the bases with no outs in the first but scoring only once. The Braves (2-24) left the bases loaded in that opening frame, a missed opportunity that preceded the Delta Devils’ offensive breakout.
Alcorn State out-hit Mississippi Valley State 15-10 but stranded 14 runners. Keaten Hawk and Kanious Davis each had three hits for the Braves, and Christian Dunn added two hits and an RBI.
The Delta Devils put the game out of reach with a six-run seventh inning, highlighted by a grand slam from catcher Ty Burns. His shot to left field extended the lead to 15-5.
Mississippi Valley State used seven pitchers in a bullpen game. Lucas Valencia started and was credited with the win after allowing three runs over three innings. Brock Lenhardt, James Snipes and Angel Escobar combined for 4 1/3 scoreless innings of relief.
Alcorn State starter Jose Cherena took the loss, allowing eight runs, only one earned, over three innings. Braves reliever Chase Ragas provided a bright spot with two scoreless innings of work late.
The Braves scored three times in the bottom of the ninth, with RBI from pinch-hitter Gavin Caston and Chance Thurston, but could not complete a comeback.
The victory went against the projection from Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a 5-1 Delta Devils win. Mississippi Valley State’s offense far exceeded that output.
The teams were scheduled to conclude the doubleheader later Wednesday.
