Mississippi Valley State, Alcorn State Open Series in SWAC Matchup
LORMAN, Miss. (Interstat) — Two Southwestern Athletic Conference teams looking to build on rare recent wins will meet Wednesday when the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils visit the Alcorn State Braves for a doubleheader opener.
The Delta Devils (7-17) enter having won three of their last four, including a three-game sweep of Alabama A&M last weekend. The Braves (2-22) are seeking any positive momentum, having lost 10 straight games.
Mississippi Valley State won the most recent meeting between the teams, 15-7, on March 1.
A key figure for the Delta Devils is designated hitter Tom Early. He is coming off a 3-for-4, four-RBI performance in Sunday’s 9-8 win over Alabama A&M. Over his last five games, Early is 8-for-16 with seven RBIs.
For Alcorn State, reliever Henry Allred has been a rare bright spot in a struggling pitching staff. In his last three appearances, spanning two innings, he has allowed just one hit and no earned runs while striking out four. He pitched a third of a scoreless inning in Sunday’s 14-2 loss at Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
Both teams have struggled overall this season. The Braves have been outscored 285-106, while the Delta Devils have been outscored 217-141.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 5-1 victory for Mississippi Valley State in the first game.
The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. CDT at Alcorn State’s Foster Field at McGowan Stadium.
