Saint Joseph`s at Delaware
NEWARK, Del. (Interstat) — The Delaware Blue Hens erupted for 18 runs on 12 hits in a commanding shutout victory over the Saint Joseph’s Hawks on Wednesday evening at Bob Hannah Stadium, a result that defied pregame projections and handed the Hawks their most lopsided defeat of the season.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a narrow 6-5 win for Saint Joseph’s, but the Blue Hens dismantled that forecast early and often, scoring in each of the first four innings and putting the game out of reach with an eight-run sixth inning. The win improved Delaware to 9-12 overall, while Saint Joseph’s fell to 8-9.
The most important sequence of the game came in the bottom of the first inning, immediately setting a dominant tone. After starter Chase Deibler set the Hawks down in order in the top half, Delaware’s Jeremy Wolf worked a walk, advanced to second on a balk, and stole third. Evan Bouldin then stepped in and launched a two-run homer to left-center field, providing all the offense Delaware would ultimately need.
Bouldin, the game’s top star, was flawless at the plate, going 3 for 3 with a home run, two walks, and five RBIs. His performance sparked an offense that capitalized on 11 walks and two Saint Joseph’s errors. Catcher Anthony DeCesare matched Bouldin’s three hits, driving in three runs with a pair of doubles.
The Blue Hens’ pitching was equally stifling. Starter Chase Deibler earned the win with three perfect innings, striking out three. Relievers Nicholas Bilotto, Ben Moyzan, and Ethan Shaub combined for four scoreless innings, allowing just one hit. The Hawks managed only a sixth-inning single by Jason Janesko, which was immediately erased by a double play.
Saint Joseph’s never advanced a runner past second base. Their pitchers struggled with command, issuing walks that fueled Delaware’s big innings. The Hawks used seven pitchers, with Peter Bashore, Patrick Veintimilla, and Carson Magill managing scoreless outings in relief.
Delaware broke the game open with a three-run second inning, highlighted by a two-run single from Sal Mineo, who finished with three RBIs. They added three more in the third on Bouldin’s two-run single and another in the fourth on DeCesare’s two-run double, making it 10-0.
The eight-run sixth inning sealed the rout, featuring five walks, a two-run double by Matthew Minckler, an RBI double by DeCesare, and two runs scoring on balks. Seven of the runs in the frame were unearned due to a critical Saint Joseph’s error.
The victory provided a potent offensive rebound for Delaware, which had been held to seven total runs in a three-game sweep at Louisiana Tech over the weekend. For Saint Joseph’s, the defeat halted momentum from a series win at Richmond last weekend and underscored persistent struggles on the road.
Delaware opens a three-game home series against Dallas Baptist on Friday. Saint Joseph’s returns home to begin Atlantic 10 Conference play against George Washington on Friday.
