Saint Joseph`s at Delaware

NEWARK, Del. (Interstat) — Two teams looking to build momentum meet Wednesday evening when the Saint Joseph’s Hawks visit the Delaware Blue Hens in nonconference baseball at Bob Hannah Stadium.

First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. on March 18. Both teams enter with 8-8 overall records, though Delaware has played four more games, sitting at 8-12.

The Hawks are riding high after taking three straight from Richmond over the weekend, capped by a 5-1 win Sunday. Saint Joseph’s has won five of its last six.

A key to that surge has been starter Luke Parise. The right-hander is coming off a dominant performance, throwing six no-hit innings with one earned run against Richmond. In his last three starts, he has allowed just three hits over 18 innings. His season, however, includes a rough outing on Feb. 22 where he surrendered eight runs in 1 2/3 innings against Sacramento State.

Delaware seeks to rebound after being swept in a three-game series at Louisiana Tech, including a 17-4 loss Sunday. The Blue Hens have lost four straight.

A player to watch for the home team is reliever Ryan McLaughlin. The right-hander has been effective in stretches, not allowing a hit in four of his seven appearances this season. In Sunday’s loss, he threw four hitless innings of relief, giving up two earned runs. He logged three scoreless, hitless innings against Penn on March 10.

In Sunday’s win for Saint Joseph’s, Alex Venezia powered the offense, going 2-for-4 with two home runs and two RBIs. Designated hitter Blake Primrose added three hits and two RBIs.

For Delaware on Sunday, second baseman Jeremy Wolf drove in two runs.

According to Interstat’s game simulator, this contest projects to be a tight one, with a predicted final score of Saint Joseph’s 6, Delaware 5.

Following this midweek matchup, both teams jump into weekend series. Saint Joseph’s opens Atlantic 10 play at home against George Washington. Delaware begins a home series against Dallas Baptist.
