Maryland-Eastern Shore at Central Connecticut
NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (Interstat) — Antonio Ducatelli drove in six runs on a perfect 4-for-4 day, powering the Central Connecticut Blue Devils to a 13-6 victory over the Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawks in a non-conference baseball game Monday at Balf-Savin Field.
The game, which started in the afternoon and concluded in the evening, saw the Blue Devils erase an early four-run deficit with a relentless offensive performance, sweeping the three-game series from the Hawks.
Maryland-Eastern Shore struck first, plating an unearned run in the opening inning. Darrius Brown singled, advanced to third on an error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jonathan Gonzalez Perez.
Central Connecticut responded decisively in the bottom of the second inning against Hawks starter Cade Williams. Trailing 1-0, the Blue Devils sent nine men to the plate and scored four runs. Chris Barkasy tripled to drive in two, and Ducatelli followed with a two-run double to give Central Connecticut a 4-1 lead.
The Hawks chipped away, adding a run in the third on an RBI single from Diego Aponte and another in the eighth on an RBI single from Chris Azcona and a run scored on a Blue Devil error, closing the gap to 7-6.
The most important part of the game came in the bottom of the eighth inning, when Central Connecticut broke the game open by sending 13 batters to the plate and scoring six runs to put the contest out of reach. The inning was fueled by shaky Hawks relief pitching, two walks, an error and timely hitting. Ducatelli delivered the go-ahead RBI single, his fourth hit and fifth RBI of the day. Matt Graziose and Owen Arias added run-scoring hits before Donte Valentine capped the outburst with a two-run single.
Maryland-Eastern Shore got solo home runs from Darrius Brown and Jonathan Gonzalez Perez in the ninth inning, but it was not enough.
Blue Devils starter Jacob Hines earned the win, allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits over five innings. He struck out four. Hawks starter Cade Williams took the loss, surrendering five earned runs on five hits and three walks in five innings.
Ducatelli was the clear standout, raising his average in the three-game series against the Hawks to .667 with 10 RBIs. Gonzalez Perez led the Hawks with three hits, including a home run, and two RBIs.
Central Connecticut improved to 4-2 overall, while Maryland-Eastern Shore fell to 1-12. The Blue Devils next host Northeastern on Wednesday. The Hawks are off until a weekend series against Stonehill beginning Friday.
