Sharks Outslug Spartans in Doubleheader Opener

NEW YORK (Interstat) — Elijah Fairchild and Michael Polubinski each hit two-run homers to power the Long Island Sharks past the Norfolk State Spartans 7-5 on Saturday at Long Island University Field in the first game of a doubleheader.

The Sharks overcame an early deficit, erasing a 5-1 hole with a five-run third inning. Fairchild’s homer gave Long Island a 6-5 lead it would not relinquish. Polubinski, the top star, also homered and drove in two.

Norfolk State’s Josiah Harrison went 3 for 4 with a three-run homer. Starter Ethan Blakeney threw four hitless innings in relief, but Spartans starter Walker Fuller allowed six earned runs over four innings in the loss.

Long Island improved to 2-7. Norfolk State fell to 2-10.
