Air Force at Baylor
WACO, Texas (Interstat) — Brady Janusek’s two-run homer in the fifth inning capped a four-run rally and propelled Baylor to a 5-4 victory over Air Force in a nonconference baseball game that spanned two days at Baylor Ballpark on Saturday.
The game, which began Saturday afternoon, was suspended in the bottom of the second inning due to unspecified conditions and resumed Sunday at 1 p.m., concluding in the evening. The Bears improved to 8-6, while the Falcons fell to 3-10.
Air Force built an early lead, scratching across a run in the second inning. Sam Hanoian singled, advanced on a wild pitch and a groundout, and scored on a fielder’s choice RBI grounder by Ryan Wolff.
The Falcons’ advantage held until the Bears’ offense awoke in the middle innings. Baylor cut the deficit to 4-1 in the third when Travis Sanders grounded out to second, scoring Hunter Clements. In the fourth, the Bears pulled within a run on a double play groundout by Ty Buchanan that allowed Janusek to score.
The decisive sequence came in the fifth. After Sanders doubled home Diego Garza to make it 4-3, Air Force reliever Jordan Watkins was replaced by Marcus Downing. Downing struck out Wesley Johnson for the second out, but Janusek followed by launching his third home run of the season over the left-field wall, scoring Sanders ahead of him and giving Baylor its first lead at 5-4.
The most important part of the game was Baylor’s four-run fifth inning, which transformed a 4-1 deficit into a 5-4 lead. The rally was sustained by key hits with two outs and culminated in Janusek’s go-ahead two-run homer immediately after a pitching change, seizing momentum for good.
Air Force threatened repeatedly but was stifled by Baylor’s bullpen. Zack Wallace provided three scoreless innings of relief, allowing just one hit. Grayson Murry followed with two more hitless frames, striking out two. The Falcons grounded into two double plays, halting potential rallies.
The Falcons mounted a serious challenge in the ninth against Baylor closer Caleb Bunch. With one out, Cam Anstey delivered a pinch-hit RBI double to cut the lead to 5-4, scoring pinch-runner Cam. Anstey then advanced to third on a groundout that scored another run. But with the tying run 90 feet away, Anstey was picked off third base on a pitcher-to-first-to-shortstop rundown for the final out of the game.
Downing was a bright spot for Air Force in relief, tossing 3 2/3 innings of no-hit ball, allowing one earned run and striking out two after inheriting the bases-loaded situation in the fifth. Joshua Holst also pitched 1 1/3 perfect innings for the Falcons.
Baylor’s Sanders finished 1-for-4 with two RBIs. For Air Force, Hanoian went 2-for-2 with two walks and a run scored, while Anstey’s pinch-hit double drove in a key run late.
Interstat’s ELO system had given Baylor a 68.4% probability to win.
The teams conclude their three-game series Sunday afternoon at Baylor Ballpark.
