Northeastern at Stony Brook
STONY BROOK, N.Y. (Interstat) — Anthony Ruggiero’s leadoff single in the top of the 13th inning sparked the decisive rally as Northeastern outlasted Stony Brook 4-3 in a Colonial Athletic Association marathon Saturday afternoon that stretched into the evening at Joe Nathan Field.
The Huskies (5-6, 2-0 CAA) squandered a late three-run lead but finally broke through against the Seawolves’ bullpen in the 13th to secure their second straight win in the series. Stony Brook (1-11, 0-2) mounted a dramatic three-run ninth-inning rally to force extra innings but ultimately fell in its 10th consecutive defeat.
The most critical juncture of the game came in the bottom of the ninth inning. Protecting a 4-1 lead, Northeastern reliever Matthew Sapienza gave up a leadoff double to Chris Carson. After a groundout advanced Carson to third, Nick Zampieron was hit by a pitch. Nick Coniglio entered from the Huskies’ bullpen and immediately surrendered an RBI single to James Schaffer, cutting the deficit to 4-2.
Coniglio then struck out pinch-hitter Chanz Doughty but walked Aidyn Coffey to load the bases. With two outs, Johnny Pilla worked a full-count walk to force in Zampieron, slashing the lead to 4-3. The potential winning run stood on third, but Mike Villani flied out to center field, sending the game to extra innings and setting the stage for the four-hour, 13-inning affair.
Northeastern had built its lead early. Ruggiero launched a solo home run to right field in the second inning. The Huskies added two more in the fourth when Jack Fosberg lined a two-run single to center, scoring Alex Cha and Luke Aschettino.
Stony Brook’s only offense through the first eight innings came on a second-inning solo homer by Nicholas Dromboski. Huskies starter Luc Rising and Sapienza largely kept the Seawolves’ bats quiet until the ninth-inning explosion.
Both teams had chances in extra innings. Northeastern loaded the bases with one out in the 10th against relievers Aidan Colagrande and John Rizzo, but Rizzo struck out Ruggiero to end the threat. Stony Brook put the potential winning run on third with one out in the 11th against Andrew Rogovic, but Aidyn Coffey flied out to center.
The stalemate finally ended in the 13th. With one out, Mike Bentley was hit by a pitch. Ruggiero followed with a single through the right side, moving Bentley to third. Cha’s flyout to right advanced Bentley, and Aschettino delivered a sacrifice fly to center to plate the go-ahead run.
Ryan Griffin, Northeastern’s fifth pitcher, worked a perfect bottom of the 13th, striking out Zampieron swinging to end the game and earn the win. The Huskies’ pitching staff combined to allow just five hits while striking out 16 Seawolves batters, though they issued eight walks.
Stony Brook used six pitchers, with starter Hunter Colagrande taking a no-decision after allowing three runs over five innings. Dylan Henshaw, Aidan Colagrande and John Rizzo provided 7 1/3 innings of scoreless relief before Northeastern broke through in the 13th.
The teams conclude their three-game series Sunday afternoon.
