Yale at George Washington

ARLINGTON, Va. (Interstat) — Conlon Walker’s three-run homer in the fifth inning erased a deficit and propelled the George Washington Revolutionaries to a 6-5 comeback victory over the Yale Bulldogs in college baseball Saturday at Barcroft Park.

The game, which stretched from afternoon into evening, saw the Revolutionaries even their season record at 6-6, while Yale fell to 3-4.

After being routed 18-3 by Yale just a day prior, George Washington found itself trailing again early. Yale built a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning on back-to-back doubles from Jack Dauer and Davi Hanson, followed by an RBI single from catcher Owen Turner.

The momentum shifted decisively in the bottom of the fifth. Yale starter Alex Hwang, who had held the Revolutionaries to two runs over the first four innings, walked the first two batters. He was relieved by Ben Winslow, who immediately surrendered Walker’s towering home run to right-center field. The blast scored Ben Freker and Charlie Walsh ahead of him, turning a 5-2 deficit into a 5-5 tie and energizing the home crowd.

Walker, the team’s top star, finished 1 for 5 with four RBIs. His homer was the critical blow in a game where Interstat’s ELO system had favored Yale with a 55.6% probability to win.

Yale responded immediately in the top of the sixth to reclaim a temporary lead. After Dauer walked and Bryce Miller was hit by a pitch, Turner delivered his second big hit, a two-run double down the left-field line off reliever Gavin Miller to put the Bulldogs back ahead 7-5. Turner went 2 for 4 with three RBIs.

George Washington’s winning rally in the eighth inning was aided by Yale’s defense. G. Marmo led off with a single to right field and advanced to third on an error on the play. Ryan Lavey then drove him home with a single to center, tying the game at 7-7. The Revolutionaries loaded the bases later in the inning against Winslow and reliever Nicholas West on an error, but could not add to their lead.

The decisive run scored in the bottom of the eighth, again stemming from a Yale miscue. Marmo reached on an error, took third on the play, and scored on Lavey’s RBI single for an 8-7 advantage.

Yale mounted a serious threat in the ninth against reliever Colin Lebel. The Bulldogs loaded the bases with one out on a pinch-hit single by Chaplin Cha, a fielder’s choice, a single by Larsen Garr, and a hit-by-pitch. Chris Diprima then lifted a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Colin Sloan to cut the lead to 8-7. With the tying run on third and the go-ahead run on second, Lebel struck out Jack Dauer swinging to end the game.

Andrew Cutler started for George Washington, allowing two runs on four hits over four innings, striking out five. Gavin Miller earned the win in relief despite allowing two runs over three innings. Colin Lebel secured the save with two innings of work, allowing one run on three hits.

For Yale, Alex Hwang took the loss, charged with four runs over 4 1/3 innings. Ben Winslow was effective in relief aside from the home run to Walker, pitching three innings and allowing one unearned run while striking out five.

Charlie Walsh and Nick Mullen each had three hits for George Washington’s 11-hit attack. Yale collected eight hits in the loss.

The two teams conclude their three-game series Sunday at Barcroft Park.
