Maryland-Baltimore County at Penn
PHILADELPHIA (Interstat) — Zach Robinson delivered a masterful performance on the mound, throwing seven no-hit innings to lead the Maryland-Baltimore County Retrievers to a 4-1 victory over the Penn Quakers in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday.
Robinson, a right-hander, was dominant from the start, striking out seven and walking none. He faced just two batters over the minimum, with a hit batsman in the first inning and a fielding error by his second baseman in the third representing the only Quakers to reach base against him. He retired the final 13 batters he faced. This outing was a stark turnaround from his previous start on Feb. 28, when he allowed five earned runs over 3 2/3 innings against Monmouth.
The Retrievers’ offense, held in check for five innings by Penn starter Marty Coyne, broke through in the sixth. Kyle Eddington was hit by a pitch, advanced to third on a throwing error by Coyne, and scored on Jesiah Carpe’s sacrifice fly. Anthony Masc followed with a double and scored on Dylan Melton’s RBI double to give UMBC a 2-0 lead.
UMBC added two insurance runs in the eighth inning off Penn reliever Josh Katz. With two on and two out, Derek Paris delivered a clutch RBI single to score Melton. An earlier run in the seventh came home on an RBI single from Sergio Droz, who had entered the game as a designated hitter.
Penn avoided the shutout in the eighth inning against UMBC reliever Sergio Droz, who had moved to the mound from second base. After a walk and a wild pitch, Gavin Degnan doubled to left field to score Davis Spaventa, cutting the deficit to 4-1.
The Quakers threatened in the ninth against UMBC closer Chris Harbert, loading the bases with two outs on a walk, an error and another walk. But Harbert induced a game-ending groundout to second base from Spaventa to secure the win.
Coyne took the hard-luck loss for Penn, allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits over 6 2/3 innings. He struck out seven. The Quakers managed just five hits total, with Degnan’s 2-for-4, RBI performance leading the way.
With the win, Maryland-Baltimore County improved to 4-5 this season. Penn fell to 1-7.
The two teams were scheduled to conclude the doubleheader later Saturday.
