Saint Thomas (Minn.) vs. Kansas

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (Interstat) — Augusto Mungarrieta launched a two-run, walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning Saturday, capping a furious late rally by the Kansas Jayhawks for a 9-8 victory over the Saint Thomas (Minn.) Tommies at a chilly Kansas City, Kansas, ballpark.

The Jayhawks, who trailed 8-2 after the top of the sixth inning, scored seven unanswered runs to complete the comeback, sweeping the first two games of the weekend series and handing the struggling Tommies their 11th loss in 12 games this season.

The most important part of the game was the Jayhawks’ relentless late-inning surge, which transformed a potential blowout into a dramatic victory. After being held to just two runs on four hits through five innings by Saint Thomas starter Owen Marsolek, the Kansas offense erupted. The comeback began in the sixth when Tyson LeBlanc laced a two-run ground-rule double, cutting the deficit to 8-4. He later scored on a groundout to make it 8-5.

The momentum fully shifted in the eighth. Jordan Bach led off with a solo homer, his fourth of the season, to pull Kansas within two runs. Two batters later, LeBlanc followed with a solo shot of his own, his third, making it a one-run game at 8-7 and setting the stage for the final inning heroics.

In the ninth, with one out, Kodey Shojinaga walked. After a strikeout, Mungarrieta stepped in and delivered the game-winning blast to right field, his third homer of the year, sending the Jayhawks to their 10th win.

Saint Thomas built its early lead by capitalizing on Kansas mistakes. The Tommies scored three unearned runs in the fifth inning, aided by an error by first baseman Michael Ballinger, to extend a 2-0 lead to 5-0. Owen Bond then provided a key blow in the sixth, a two-run homer off reliever Cooper Deer that pushed the advantage to 8-2 and appeared to put the game out of reach.

Marsolek was brilliant in a no-decision for Saint Thomas, tossing five shutout innings and allowing just two unearned runs on no hits. He walked three and struck out three. His counterpart, Kansas starter Mathis Nayral, went 4 1/3 innings, allowing five hits and three earned runs while striking out seven.

Reliever Toby Scheidt earned the win for Kansas after throwing 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Boede Rahe recorded the final out of the eighth. Saint Thomas reliever Jack Majerus took the loss, charged with three runs in two innings of work.

Joe Roder led the Tommies’ 13-hit attack, going 3 for 5 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored. Bond finished 1 for 3 with the home run, two RBIs and two walks.

For Kansas, Bach was 3 for 4 with the homer, a double, two RBIs and three runs scored. LeBlanc went 2 for 4 with the homer, a double, and three RBIs, continuing his strong series.

Kansas improved to 10-4. Saint Thomas fell to 1-11. The teams conclude their three-game series Sunday afternoon.
