Morehead State at Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Interstat) — Jaden Correa’s perfect night at the plate powered the Morehead State Eagles to a decisive 13-5 victory over the Louisville Cardinals in nonconference baseball Tuesday evening at Jim Patterson Stadium.

The Eagles, who entered the game having lost seven of their last eight, erupted for 11 hits against eight Louisville pitchers, with Correa leading the onslaught. The second baseman went 4 for 4 with two home runs, four RBIs, three runs scored, a walk and a stolen base. His performance sparked a Morehead State offense that broke open a close game with a seven-run fifth inning.

Louisville struck first in the bottom of the second against Morehead State starter Cole Wells. After a single and a hit batter, catcher Jimmy Nugent doubled to left-center field, driving in two runs for an early 2-0 lead.

The Eagles answered immediately in the top of the fourth. After a walk to Ryley Griffith, Correa launched his first home run of the night, a two-run shot to left field off Cardinals starter Colton Hartman, tying the game.

The contest turned decisively in the top of the fifth. Morehead State sent 12 batters to the plate, scoring seven runs on five hits and three walks against three Louisville relievers. The rally included an RBI double from Colton Germann, a run-scoring single from Brayden Kean, and a pinch-hit RBI single from Dutton. Correa capped the inning with a towering three-run homer to left field, his second of the game, extending the Eagles’ lead to 9-2.

Morehead State added three more runs in the seventh on a sacrifice fly from Nick Sheridan and RBI hit-by-pitch and walk from Germann and Kean, respectively. The Eagles tacked on a final run in the ninth on an RBI double by Rolen Kearns.

Louisville managed three runs across the sixth and seventh innings. An RBI double by Gavin Crain in the sixth made it 9-3. In the seventh, a pinch-hit single by Baker, coupled with a throwing error by Morehead State pitcher Alex Miller, allowed two runs to score, cutting the deficit to 12-5. That was as close as the Cardinals would get.

The most important sequence of the game was Morehead State’s seven-run fifth inning, which transformed a 2-2 tie into a commanding 9-2 lead. The Eagles capitalized on shaky relief pitching from Louisville, with Correa’s three-run blast serving as the crushing blow from which the Cardinals could not recover.

Eagles reliever Carter Owens earned the win with 3 1/3 scoreless innings of one-hit ball, striking out one. Hartman took the loss for Louisville, allowing three earned runs over four innings.

The victory improved Morehead State’s record to 5-7, while Louisville fell to 7-5. The result was a stark reversal of the pregame projection by Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a 7-4 Louisville win.

Morehead State travels to face Butler for a three-game series starting Friday. Louisville will host Seton Hall for a three-game set beginning the same day.
