Bowling Green at Cincinnati

CINCINNATI (Interstat) — Quinton Coats launched a three-run homer as part of a decisive fifth-inning outburst, powering the Cincinnati Bearcats to an 11-1 victory over the Bowling Green Falcons in nonconference baseball action Wednesday evening at Marge Schott Stadium.

The Bearcats (6-3) broke open a close game with a five-run fifth inning, turning a 4-1 lead into a commanding 9-1 advantage. The offensive surge was more than enough for a Cincinnati pitching staff that limited the Falcons (1-4) to six hits while striking out 13 batters.

After a scoreless top of the first, Cincinnati quickly erased an early deficit in the bottom half. Derrick Pitts, who finished the day 4 for 5, doubled home Alec Jack to tie the game. Josh Natili followed with an RBI single to give the Bearcats a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish.

Bowling Green’s lone run came in the fourth inning. Nathan Seidel singled, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a fielder’s choice by TJ Horky.

The game’s pivotal sequence came in the bottom of the fifth. After Ryan Tyranski led off with a solo home run to center, the Bearcats loaded the bases. With two outs, Coats stepped in and delivered the crushing blow, a three-run shot to deep left field for his fourth homer of the season. The blast capped the five-run frame and extended Cincinnati’s lead to 9-1.

Coats, the Bearcats’ first baseman, went 2 for 5 with the homer and three RBIs, continuing a strong stretch at the plate. Over his last five games, he has three home runs and 10 RBIs.

Cincinnati starter Connor Blue (1-0) earned the win, allowing one earned run on four hits over four innings of work. He struck out three. The Bearcats’ bullpen was dominant, with four relievers combining for five scoreless innings. Adam Buczkowski was particularly sharp, striking out all three batters he faced in the seventh inning.

Bowling Green starter Ethan Stade (0-1) took the loss, charged with three runs, none earned, over two innings. The Falcons used six pitchers in the game.

Cincinnati added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to reach the final margin. Pitts drove in his second run of the game in the second inning, and pinch-hitter Tommy DuSell drew a bases-loaded walk in the sixth. Kameron Brewer added an RBI single in the seventh.

The Bearcats out-hit the Falcons 14-6. Tyranski joined Coats and Pitts with a multi-hit day, going 2 for 4 with his solo homer.

The victory gives Cincinnati momentum heading into a three-game weekend series at home against Austin Peay beginning Friday. Bowling Green, which has lost four of its first five, continues its road trip with a three-game set at Samford starting Friday.

The game’s outcome exceeded the projection of Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a 5-2 Cincinnati win. The Bearcats’ ELO win probability was set at 74.3 percent prior to first pitch.
