Maine at Charlotte
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Interstat) — Robert Nedry drove in three runs, including a go-ahead two-run triple, and the Charlotte 49ers used a parade of effective relievers to rally past the Maine Black Bears 9-4 on Wednesday afternoon at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium.
The 49ers (5-3) erased an early four-run deficit, scoring nine unanswered runs, while six Charlotte pitchers combined to allow just one unearned run over the final eight innings. The Black Bears fell to 2-7.
Maine struck immediately against Charlotte starter Adam Baker. Juju Stevens led off the game with a double down the right-field line and, after two quick outs, the Black Bears loaded the bases. Baker then walked four consecutive batters, forcing in four runs before being relieved by AJ Camp, who induced an inning-ending double play.
That early outburst proved to be Maine’s only sustained offense. Camp, Sebastian Perez, Adam Stanton, Carson C., and Ryan Combs stifled the Black Bears from there. Perez was particularly dominant, striking out four over three perfect innings of relief.
Charlotte began its methodical comeback in the second against Maine starter Erik Swenson. The 49ers loaded the bases with one out and drew back-to-back walks from Alex Orozco and Nolan S. to cut the lead to 4-2. Pierce Friedman entered for Maine and ended the threat with a strikeout.
The game turned decisively in the fifth inning. With two on and one out, Robert Nedry cleared the bases with a triple to right-center field, putting Charlotte ahead 5-4. Hudson T. followed with a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 6-4.
Nedry, who entered the game hitting .250 over his last three contests, added an RBI double in the seventh inning to finish 2 for 3. His three RBIs were the key offensive performance in a game where Charlotte managed 10 hits.
The 49ers added insurance in the sixth on an RBI single from Bryce D. and a sacrifice fly from Gunderson C., making it 8-4. Maine’s final runs came in a messy seventh inning, capitalizing on two Charlotte errors to score twice, but both runs were unearned against Stanton.
Maine’s bullpen, after the early exit of Swenson, found some bright spots. Friedman threw 1 1/3 hitless innings, and Jack Donlin pitched a perfect eighth with two strikeouts. The Black Bears collected nine hits but went just 2 for 13 with runners in scoring position and stranded nine baserunners.
The victory extended Charlotte’s winning streak to three games following a weekend sweep of Wright State. Maine has now lost five of its last six.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a 5-2 Charlotte victory, giving the 49ers an 81.4% probability to win.
Charlotte opens a three-game series at Old Dominion on Friday. Maine continues its southern road trip with a three-game set at Winthrop beginning Friday.
