UCLA at Washington
SEATTLE (Interstat) — Ian May pitched three shutout innings of relief and Roman Martin went 4-for-4 with three RBIs as UCLA defeated Washington 6-1 on Saturday evening at Husky Ballpark.
May entered the game in the fourth inning with UCLA already leading 6-1 and retired all nine batters he faced, striking out five. He did not allow a hit or a walk. May’s performance came after a rocky recent stretch; he had allowed one earned run in two combined innings over his previous two outings against Oregon on May 9 and May 10.
Martin, the Bruins’ third baseman, drove in two runs with a first-inning single and added an RBI single in the fifth. He also doubled in the third and singled in the eighth, reaching base in all four plate appearances.
UCLA, which improved to 48-6 overall, scored all six of its runs in the first inning off Washington starter Jaxson Gore. Gore lasted just two innings, allowing four earned runs on one hit and four walks while striking out two.
The Bruins loaded the bases on a walk to Phoenix Aguayo, a walk to Roch Cholowsky and a hit by pitch to Mulivai Levu. Martin then singled to left-center, scoring Aguayo and Cholowsky. Martin advanced to third and Levu scored on a wild pitch. Jack Brennan followed with a groundout to shortstop that plated Martin, making it 6-0.
Washington got its only run in the bottom of the second. With two outs, Johnny Paul walked and advanced to third on a double by AJ Cowan. After a walk to Cade Taggart, Jaxson Spear hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Paul. That cut the lead to 6-1.
The Huskies threatened in the eighth inning after Pearson substituted for Spear and was hit by a pitch. Terry walked, putting runners at first and second with one out. But UCLA reliever Zach Strickland struck out Kolby DeCarlo and Will Bower to end the inning. Strickland pitched two perfect innings with three strikeouts.
Martin’s fifth-inning single drove in Levu, who had doubled, for UCLA’s final run.
UCLA starter Angel Cervantes pitched three innings, allowing one earned run on one hit with three strikeouts. Cal Randall pitched a perfect seventh with two strikeouts. The Bruins used five pitchers total, combining for 14 strikeouts.
Washington’s Jay Miller pitched four innings in relief, allowing one earned run on three hits while striking out five. Cooper McBride tossed 2 1/3 innings, giving up one earned run on two hits with three strikeouts. Peysen Sweeney pitched the ninth, allowing one hit in two-thirds of an inning.
The Huskies managed only two hits in the game – a double by Cowan in the second and a single by DeCarlo in the sixth. Washington fell to 22-31.
UCLA evened the weekend series at one game apiece after losing 8-0 on Thursday and winning 6-5 on Friday. The Bruins have won 12 of their last 14 games, while Washington has lost four of its last six.
The game was a Big Ten conference contest.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of UCLA 8, Washington 4, and its ELO system gave the Bruins a 73.90 percent probability to win. UCLA was installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of plus 4.5.
