UCLA at Washington

SEATTLE (Interstat) — UCLA looks to salvage the finale of its Big Ten series against Washington on Saturday afternoon at Husky Ballpark, where rain and temperatures near 51 degrees are forecast for the 6 p.m. first pitch.

The Bruins (46-6, 19-4 Big Ten) have already clinched the regular-season conference title but enter on a two-game skid after dropping the first two games of this three-game set. Washington (22-29, 8-15) shut out UCLA 8-0 on Thursday and 3-0 on Friday, handing the Bruins their first back-to-back losses of the season.

UCLA right-hander Wylan Moss (7-2, 3.72 ERA) is scheduled to start. Moss had a rough outing Thursday in the series opener, allowing four earned runs on zero hits in 4⅓ innings, walking six and striking out six in the 8-0 loss. He had been dominant in his previous two starts — a 7-inning, one-run effort against Oregon on May 8 and a scoreless 6⅔-inning outing at Michigan State on May 1. Moss has 80 strikeouts in 67⅔ innings this season.

Washington counters with a lineup featuring designated hitter Colton Bower, who was the hero of Thursday’s win, going 3-for-4 with two home runs and three RBIs. Bower is hitting .296 with 11 homers and 38 RBIs. He has been streaky of late, going hitless in a loss at Penn State on May 9 after a 2-for-5 day in a win earlier that same day.

The Huskies’ pitching Thursday came from Jackson Thomas, who tossed six shutout innings with two strikeouts, and reliever Gunnar Nichols, who added three perfect frames. Washington has won three of its last four games, splitting a four-game series at Penn State on May 8-9.

UCLA, despite the recent defeats, remains the nation’s top-ranked team per most polls. The Bruins boast a potent offense that averages 9.2 runs per game, though they have managed only three runs total in two games against Washington. The Huskies’ pitching staff has a 5.12 team ERA but has held UCLA to a .172 batting average in the series.

According to Interstat’s game simulator, UCLA is projected to win 8-4, with a 73.9 percent probability. The ELO-based model favors the Bruins heavily, but Washington has already defied expectations twice this weekend. A win Saturday would give the Huskies a series sweep and likely boost their NCAA tournament résumé.
