Northeastern at Towson

TOWSON, Md. (Interstat) — Max D’Alessandro homered twice and drove in six runs, leading Towson to a 14-10 victory over Northeastern on Saturday, May 16, at John B. Schuerholz Baseball Complex.

The Tigers (21-32, 9-12 Colonial) snapped a two-game losing streak against the Huskies (34-19, 12-9) and avoided a three-game sweep. Northeastern had won the first two games of the series, 8-7 on Friday and 7-0 on Thursday.

D’Alessandro, the left fielder, finished 3 for 5 with two home runs and six RBI. He entered the game hitless in his previous two contests against Northeastern and had only one homer in his prior five games. He changed that quickly.

Towson fell behind early but erupted for six runs in the bottom of the first inning. Brian Heckelman hit a two-run homer to center field that scored Brady Nathison, and Jack Hughes followed with a two-run shot to right. Ethan Brand then homered to left, making it 6-0. Northeastern used three pitchers in the inning.

The Huskies answered in the top of the second with a run on a wild pitch, but Towson struck again in the bottom half. With the bases loaded and two outs, D’Alessandro launched a grand slam to left field, scoring Brady Nathison, Cole Stefano and Brian Heckelman. That tied the game at 10-10.

Northeastern regained the lead in the top of the third. Chase Gerety doubled down the right-field line to drive in two runs, and Aidan Brinker followed with an RBI double. The Huskies added another run on a fielder’s choice, taking a 10-6 advantage.

Towson answered in the bottom of the fourth. D’Alessandro hit his second homer of the game, a two-run shot to left that scored Heckelman and gave Towson a 12-10 lead. The Tigers never trailed again.

Northeastern tied the game in the top of the fifth on Gerety’s two-run homer to right, scoring Jack Feinberg. But Towson regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth when Hughes hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring D’Alessandro. That made it 13-10.

Brady Nathison added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh with a solo homer to left, pushing the lead to 14-10. Nathison finished 2 for 4 with a home run and one RBI.

Heckelman was 2 for 3 with a homer and two RBI. Hughes drove in three runs on a hit and a sacrifice fly. Brand went 2 for 4 with a homer and one RBI. Frank Adamski Jr. was 2 for 4 with a run.

Northeastern’s offense kept the game close. Gerety finished with a double, a homer and four RBI. The Huskies also got a home run from WalshCh, who went deep twice, including a two-run shot in the ninth inning that pulled Northeastern within four. But the rally fell short.

Towson used five pitchers. Matt Lynch threw three innings, allowing six hits and three earned runs while striking out four. Nick Karls pitched a perfect inning with no hits. Jacob Whiteman went two innings, giving up two earned runs on two hits with two strikeouts. Jake Michel allowed one earned run on three hits in one inning.

Northeastern’s bullpen struggled. The Huskies used seven pitchers, and Towson’s hitters took advantage of 10 walks and a hit batter.

The game featured 24 combined runs on 23 hits. Towson had 13 hits; Northeastern had hits but did not have a team hit total reported in the game log.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Northeastern 8, Towson 4, and Interstat’s ELO system had given Northeastern an 86.30 percent probability to win before the game.
