Creighton at Xavier
CINCINNATI (Interstat) — Creighton and Xavier meet Saturday afternoon at Marge Schott Stadium in the rubber match of their Big East series, with the Bluejays holding a narrow edge in the projections despite recent struggles.
First pitch is scheduled for the afternoon under cloudy skies with temperatures near 65 degrees. Creighton (29-23) took the series opener Thursday 5-2 before Xavier (26-28) evened the set with a 3-2 victory Friday.
The Bluejays’ offense has been inconsistent, and their fortunes often hinge on center fielder Isaac Wachsmann. The senior delivered two home runs and two RBIs in Friday’s loss, going 2-for-4, but was 0-for-5 in Thursday’s win. Over his last 10 games, Wachsmann has three multi-hit performances but also five hitless outings. He is 4-for-12 with three home runs against Xavier this season.
Xavier counters with right-hander Ashton Chronister, who earned the win Friday by allowing one earned run on five hits over 6 1/3 innings with two strikeouts. Chronister has been sharp in recent starts, posting a 2.84 ERA over his last three appearances spanning 18 1/3 innings. He also threw six shutout innings in an April 19 win at Seton Hall.
The Musketeers, who have won four of their last six, are led at the plate by third baseman Luke Hammond. He hit a solo home run in Friday’s win and is 3-for-7 in the series.
Creighton has lost four of its last six overall, while Xavier has won four of its last five at home.
The Interstat game simulator projects a 6-4 Xavier victory, but the Interstat ELO system gives Creighton a 54.00 percent probability to win.
