Hofstra at Stony Brook
STONY BROOK, N.Y. (Interstat) — The Hofstra Pride and the Stony Brook Seawolves meet Saturday afternoon at Joe Nathan Field in a Colonial Athletic Association matchup that carries postseason implications for both sides.
Hofstra (20-25) enters the game having taken the first two games of this four-game series, winning 8-1 on Friday and 4-0 on Thursday. The Pride have won three of their last four overall, though they dropped a high-scoring 18-10 decision to Monmouth on May 10.
Stony Brook (20-30) has lost three straight and six of its last eight. The Seawolves’ most recent win came May 3 against Massachusetts-Lowell.
The forecast calls for 64-degree temperatures and cloudy skies at first pitch.
Players to watch
Hofstra right-hander Jackson Bauer delivered a dominant start in Friday’s win, tossing 5 1/3 scoreless innings with four strikeouts and no hits allowed. He also threw four scoreless innings with five strikeouts in an April 21 victory at NJIT. However, Bauer has been inconsistent, allowing six runs on six hits in one inning against Saint John’s on April 28 and three runs in 1 2/3 innings against Monmouth on May 10.
Stony Brook right-hander Micah Worley took the loss Friday despite a solid outing: 6 1/3 innings, three hits, two earned runs and seven strikeouts. On May 2, he threw five scoreless innings against Massachusetts-Lowell, and on April 18 he tossed eight shutout innings against Monmouth with 10 strikeouts. But he was roughed up May 8 at Northeastern, allowing seven runs in 3 1/3 innings.
Series history
The teams have split five meetings this season. Stony Brook won two of three at Hofstra from April 10-12, including a 12-11, 10-inning victory. Hofstra has seized momentum this week with back-to-back wins at Joe Nathan Field.
Projections
Interstat’s game simulator predicts a 6-5 Hofstra victory. The same outlet’s ELO system gives Stony Brook a 55.6 percent probability to win.
Hofstra’s Gabriel Melara went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs in Friday’s win. Sean Hamilton added 3 2/3 scoreless innings of relief. For Stony Brook on Friday, Nick Zampieron singled once and James Schaffer had one hit and an RBI.
