Notre Dame at Pittsburgh
PITTSBURGH (Interstat) — The Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Pittsburgh Panthers meet Saturday afternoon at Petersen Sports Complex in a pivotal Atlantic Coast Conference series finale.
Notre Dame (29-21) took the opener 6-4 in 10 innings Friday afternoon, snapping a three-game losing streak in the series after Pittsburgh (30-22) won 6-3 on Thursday. The Saturday showdown will be played under cloudy skies with a temperature of 64 degrees.
The Irish enter with momentum, having won five of their last six overall. Right-hander Ty Uber is a key arm out of the bullpen. In Friday’s win, Uber threw 4 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing no hits and two earned runs while striking out six. Over his last five appearances, all Notre Dame victories, he has posted a 2.70 ERA with 18 strikeouts in 16 innings.
For Pittsburgh, catcher Joey Baran provides a power threat. He homered and drove in two runs Friday, going 2 for 3. However, Baran has struggled lately, with just one hit in his previous 20 at-bats before that performance.
The Panthers have dropped four straight conference games and seven of their last nine overall. Pittsburgh’s pitching staff allowed six runs in each of the first two games against the Irish, and the bullpen has a 5.93 ERA over the last week.
Notre Dame’s offense has been explosive, averaging 8.3 runs over its last seven games. Mason Barth drove in two runs Friday, including a home run, and is hitting .312 with 11 homers on the season. The Irish are 18-8 in ACC play, while the Panthers are 15-12.
Interstat’s game simulator projects an 8-3 Notre Dame victory, with the Irish holding a 58.8 percent win probability according to its ELO system.
First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
