Clemson at Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. (Interstat) — Jack Crighton went 3 for 5 with a home run and two RBIs to lead Clemson to a 10-8 victory over Virginia Tech on Saturday afternoon at English Field, snapping a four-game losing streak and avoiding a sweep in the Atlantic Coast Conference series.

Crighton, who had totaled three hits in his previous 17 at-bats, delivered a run-scoring single in the seventh inning and a solo homer in the ninth. His third home run of the season gave the Tigers a 10-5 lead and proved critical as the Hokies mounted a late comeback.

Clemson improved to 31-25 overall and 15-14 in the ACC, while Virginia Tech fell to 29-23 and 14-15.

The most important sequence occurred in the top of the third inning. Trailing 4-1 after Virginia Tech’s Hudson Lutterman crushed a three-run homer in the first, Clemson sent 10 batters to the plate and scored five runs to take a 10-4 lead. Tristan Purify walked and Cam McCladdie singled before Josh Savoie drove in Purify with a single. After a mound visit, Luke Gaffney launched a three-run homer to center field, his ninth of the season, plating McCladdie and Savoie. Later in the inning, Tyson Lichtenberger walked, Crighton singled, and Lichtenberger stole home while Andrew Dillard struck out, extending the lead.

The outburst erased an early deficit that included Ethan Gibson’s leadoff home run in the first, his sixth, and Lutterman’s 10th homer, a three-run shot that scored Henry Cooke and Christian Ball. Virginia Tech added a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Cooke.

Clemson padded its lead in the seventh. Gaffney was hit by a pitch, advanced on a passed ball, and scored on a single by Cooper Jarrell. Crighton then singled home Jarrell. In the eighth, Purify homered to left, his fifth.

Virginia Tech’s bullpen kept the Hokies within reach. Luke Craytor pitched 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out three. Madden Clement struck out two in a perfect sixth. Brendan Yagesh recorded one out without allowing a hit.

The Hokies rallied in the ninth. After a single by Chris Locurto, pinch hitter Wyatt Hurt walked and pinch hitter Cameron Hughes grounded into a fielder’s choice. An error by shortstop Lichtenberger allowed an unearned run to score. After a flyout, Gibson walked, and Cooke singled up the middle to drive in two more unearned runs, cutting the deficit to 10-8. Ball was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but Lutterman flied out to center field to end the game.

Clemson used seven pitchers. Justin LeGuernic allowed one unearned run in two innings. Landon Fowler threw 1.1 scoreless innings, Talan Bell tossed 1.2 scoreless frames, and the combination of Drew Frusco and Allen Miller closed out the ninth.

The Tigers had 14 hits and the Hokies 11. Clemson stole four bases, including a double steal in the third when Lichtenberger stole home and Crighton stole second.

The victory came after Clemson lost the first two games of the series, 2-1 on Friday and 5-1 on Thursday.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Virginia Tech 7, Clemson 4, while its ELO system gave Clemson a 56.40 percent probability to win.
