Saturday, May 16, 2026 · Final · ACC Playoffs Game 3 (VT wins 2-1)

Clemson at Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. (Interstat) — Clemson and Virginia Tech conclude their three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series Saturday with a doubleheader at English Field, where the Tigers look to rebound from consecutive losses. The first game is scheduled for the afternoon, the second in the evening. Forecast: 63 degrees, cloudy.

Virginia Tech (28-22 overall) has won the first two games of the set, including a 5-1 victory Thursday and a scoreless tie Friday that was called due to weather (Interstat) — the result officially recorded as a 0-0 draw. The Hokies outhit Clemson 6-3 in Thursday’s contest behind starter Brett Renfrow, who allowed one earned run over 7⅓ innings with five strikeouts. Renfrow will be a player to watch Saturday; he has been dominant of late, tossing seven scoreless innings in a win at California on May 1 and eight shutout frames against North Carolina State on April 24.

Clemson (30-24) struggled offensively in the series opener, managing just one run on three hits. The Tigers’ bullpen allowed four earned runs over 5⅔ innings. Right-hander Danny Nelson took the loss Thursday, surrendering two earned runs in 3⅓ innings. Nelson has been effective overall in recent appearances, posting scoreless outings in three of his past four games, including four shutout innings against Florida State on May 9.

Clemson enters Saturday having lost three of its last four, including a 6-3 defeat at South Carolina Upstate on Tuesday. The Tigers dropped two of three to Florida State at home the previous weekend. Virginia Tech, meanwhile, has won four of its last six, splitting a two-game series with UNC Greensboro after taking two of three at California.

The Hokies’ lineup is bolstered by third baseman Owen Petrich, who homered and drove in two runs Thursday. Right-hander Preston Crowl provided 1⅔ scoreless innings of relief.

The Interstat game simulator projects a 7-4 victory for Virginia Tech in Saturday’s first game.

The Tigers will need stronger starting pitching to keep pace with a Hokies team that has outscored opponents 28-16 over its last five games. Clemson’s offense, which averaged 3.8 runs per game in May, must solve Renfrow or the Hokies’ bullpen to avoid a series sweep.

First pitch for the afternoon game is set for 1 p.m., with the nightcap to follow at 6 p.m. Both games will be played under partly cloudy skies with temperatures dropping into the upper 50s by evening.
