New Mexico at Grand Canyon
PHOENIX (Interstat) — Luke Mansy’s three-run home run in the first inning gave New Mexico an early lead, but Grand Canyon rallied for two runs in the ninth inning to claim a 4-3 victory Saturday at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
The Antelopes improved to 19-28 while the Lobos fell to 25-22-1 in a Mountain West matchup.
Mansy, New Mexico’s second baseman, went 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs. His sixth homer of the season came in the top of the first after Anthony Diaz doubled and Brayden Carris singled. The blast to deep right field scored Diaz and Carris, giving the Lobos a 3-0 advantage.
New Mexico starting pitcher Ryan Castillo worked seven innings, allowing no hits and two earned runs while striking out seven. He held Grand Canyon hitless through the first five innings, but the Antelopes began to break through in the sixth.
Grand Canyon scored its first run in the bottom of the sixth. Jake Sanko doubled to left-center and Mito Perez singled to center, putting runners on the corners. Camden Schmidt grounded into a double play, but Sanko scored on the play to cut the lead to 3-1.
The Antelopes added another run in the seventh. After consecutive singles by Matt Ohland and pinch-hitter Brody Huff, a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position. Camden Bates singled to right field, driving in Ohland, but Huff was thrown out at home. Bates later advanced on a single by Andrew Cameron, but New Mexico escaped further damage.
Grand Canyon starting pitcher JT Guerrero worked 7 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on six hits with six strikeouts. He rebounded from a rough outing earlier in the week against San Jose State in which he allowed six earned runs in 4 1/3 innings.
New Mexico had opportunities to extend its lead but stranded runners in scoring position. The Lobos managed eight hits but left eight men on base. Anthony Diaz finished 2 for 5, while Jake Sanko also went 2 for 5 for Grand Canyon. Camden Bates went 2 for 3 with an RBI.
The game turned dramatically in the bottom of the ninth. New Mexico brought in reliever Talor Grubbs in the eighth, and he allowed one earned run on no hits in one inning of work. Luke Wiseman entered to start the ninth after Grubbs faced one batter.
Grand Canyon’s comeback began when pinch-hitter Carlos Galvan walked. A subsequent walk to Dylan Johns put two runners on. Camden Bates sacrificed the runners into scoring position, and Cameron drove in the tying run with a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring pinch-runner Logan Penzkover.
With two outs, Sanko singled through the left side to load the bases. Perez then was hit by a pitch, forcing in Johns for the walk-off victory.
Grand Canyon reliever Nicholas Robb earned the win with 1 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out one.
The Antelopes outhit the Lobos 10-8 but grounded into two double plays.
New Mexico and Grand Canyon are scheduled to meet again Sunday in the series finale. The Lobos fell to Grand Canyon in 10 innings Friday, 6-5.
