New Mexico at Grand Canyon
PHOENIX (Interstat) — Grand Canyon and New Mexico continue their Mountain West series Saturday at Phoenix Municipal Stadium, with the Antelopes seeking a second straight win after Friday’s victory over the Lobos.
First pitch is at 6 p.m. local time.
New Mexico (25-20-1) enters the contest having dropped four of its last five games, including an 8-4 loss to Air Force on Sunday. The Lobos were held to four runs in that defeat, with designated hitter Antonio Gianni going 3-for-3 with an RBI.
Grand Canyon (17-28) snapped a modest slide with Friday’s win after losing a series at San Jose State, capped by a 6-1 loss Sunday. The Antelopes have struggled to find consistency this season, but they earned a split of a midweek series with Arizona and recorded a lopsided win over BYU late last month.
Players to watch
New Mexico reliever Josh Barnhouse has been a frequent presence out of the bullpen. Over his last seven outings, Barnhouse has worked 10 1/3 innings, allowing four earned runs while striking out 10. He worked 2 1/3 scoreless innings against Air Force on Sunday, striking out one. On the season, he has shown the ability to limit damage, though he has been tagged for earned runs in three of those seven appearances.
Grand Canyon right-hander Garrett Ahern turned in a sharp relief outing Sunday at San Jose State, tossing two scoreless innings with two strikeouts and no hits allowed. Ahern has appeared sparingly but has been effective when called upon.
Recent history
The Lobos and Antelopes met 13 times last season, with New Mexico winning eight of those contests. Friday’s result was the first meeting of 2026 between the two programs.
New Mexico’s offense has been productive at times but inconsistent, as evidenced by a 10-inning 16-15 loss to New Mexico State on April 28. The Lobos have scored at least nine runs in four of their last seven wins but have been held to four or fewer in five of their last eight games overall.
Grand Canyon has shown resilience at home, including an 9-8 win over Arizona on April 28. The Antelopes have struggled against Mountain West opponents, however, going 3-9 in conference play.
Looking ahead
The series concludes Sunday with a matinee matchup at Phoenix Municipal Stadium. New Mexico then returns home to face New Mexico State on Tuesday, while Grand Canyon hosts Arizona State on Tuesday before traveling to Nevada for a three-game set May 14-16.
An Interstat simulation projects a 4-3 Grand Canyon win Saturday.
