Towson at Hofstra

SOUTH HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (Interstat) — The Towson Tigers survived a furious ninth‑inning rally by the Hofstra Pride to secure a 6‑5 victory Saturday afternoon in a Colonial Athletic Association contest at University Field.

The win lifted Towson to 17‑26 overall and 8‑13 in conference play, while Hofstra fell to 16‑23 and 7‑14. The Tigers bounced back one day after a 12‑1 loss to the Pride on Friday and have now won two of the last three meetings between the teams.

Aden Knowles delivered the start of his season for Towson. The right‑hander worked 6⅔ innings, allowing no hits and two earned runs while striking out four. Knowles walked three and hit two batters, but he escaped multiple jams to keep Hofstra off the scoreboard through the first five frames. It was a sharp turnaround from his previous two outings, when he gave up a combined nine earned runs over three innings against Stony Brook.

Towson jumped ahead in the top of the first. Dan Nathison walked, advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Kyle Kolb, and scored on a double to left center by shortstop Yariel Rodriguez, who drove in two runs for the game. Rodriguez finished 1‑for‑4 with two RBIs.

The Tigers added two more in the fourth. Frank Francuzenko walked, and after a pop‑out, J.T. LoBello singled up the middle. Rodriguez then doubled to right field, plating both runners to make it 3‑0.

Hofstra starter Chris Bedford worked two innings, allowing three hits and one earned run. Joseph Curreri relieved him and threw 2⅔ innings, surrendering two hits and two earned runs with two strikeouts. Brayden Gregg tossed three innings of one‑hit ball, striking out three.

The Pride broke through in the sixth. Chris Craig singled, moved to third on a single by Lou Castrataro, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Michael Brown. After Castrataro stole second, Tyler Cox singled to right to drive him home, cutting the deficit to 3‑2.

Towson answered in the eighth. Rodriguez singled, and after a pinch‑running substitution, a walk and a hit batter loaded the bases. LoBello walked to force in a run, making it 4‑2.

In the top of the ninth, the Tigers stretched their lead. Nathison singled, was sacrificed to second, and a walk and a single by Frank Adamski Jr. brought him home. Another hit batter loaded the bases, and Josh Janove walked to force in a run, making it 6‑2.

Hofstra mounted a final charge in the bottom of the ninth. Craig singled, and after a strikeout, Brown singled him home to make it 6‑3. Brown advanced to third on a wild pitch, and Greg Griggs was intentionally walked. Tyler Cox then singled to right, scoring Brown and sending pinch‑runner Ben Bausone to third, pulling Hofstra within 6‑5.

Towson summoned Jacob Whiteman from the bullpen with one out and runners on first and third. Whiteman struck out Luis Melara swinging to end the game, earning his first save of the season. Ryder Jeske had earlier worked two innings for Towson, allowing three earned runs on no hits with four strikeouts.

For Hofstra, Cox went 3‑for‑5 with two RBIs. Brown was 1‑for‑4 with two RBIs. The Pride outhit the Tigers 9‑7, but Towson’s two sacrifice hits helped manufacture key runs.

The most critical juncture came in the bottom of the ninth, when Hofstra clawed back from a four‑run deficit to bring the tying run to third with one out. Whiteman’s strikeout of Melara preserved the victory and gave Towson a badly needed conference win.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Hofstra 4, Towson 2, and its ELO system gave Hofstra a 67.40 percent probability to win.
