Bowling Green at Eastern Michigan
YPSILANTI, Mich. (Interstat) — The Eastern Michigan Eagles snapped a four-game losing streak Friday afternoon, defeating the Bowling Green Falcons 6-1 in a Mid-American Conference matchup at Oestrike Stadium.
The Eagles improved to 14-29 overall, while the Falcons dropped to 14-25. Eastern Michigan scratched across an unearned run in the third inning to tie the game, then broke it open with a four-run fifth inning and added an insurance run in the eighth.
Bowling Green starter Ethan Stade worked 4⅔ innings, allowing four runs — all earned — on zero hits while striking out six and walking two. He was touched for four runs in the fifth despite not surrendering a hit, as the Eagles capitalized on three walks, a single and a fielding error to seize control.
Eastern Michigan right-hander John Carmichael turned in the top performance of the game. He pitched 8⅔ innings, scattering three hits and allowing one earned run while striking out eight. Carmichael, who had a rough outing in his previous appearance, was efficient and dominant, retiring the Falcons in order in four of the first five innings.
The Falcons managed only three hits all afternoon. Their lone run came in the ninth inning when TJ Takats singled to center field, driving in Anthony DiLodovico, who had walked and stolen second. Takats finished 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Eastern Michigan’s offense was led by Ty Stecko, who went 1-for-4 with a two-run single in the pivotal fifth inning. John Hale contributed a 1-for-4 day with an RBI single and later scored. Bruce Jellison added a 1-for-4 effort with an RBI single, and Devan Zirwas finished 1-for-3.
The turning point came in the bottom of the fifth inning with the score tied 1-1. After Borchardt was hit by a pitch and Weaver struck out, Knupp singled to center field, putting runners at first and second. Sydlowski struck out, but Hale’s single through the left side scored Borchardt for a 2-1 lead. Jellison followed with a single to center that drove in Knupp, making it 3-1. After Zirwas walked, Stecko lined a two-run single through the left side, scoring Jellison and Hale to push the lead to 5-1. Ethan Papacek relieved Stade and retired the side.
Eastern Michigan added its final run in the eighth inning. After two quick outs, Joseph Buchanan, who had just entered in relief, allowed a single to Weaver. Knupp was hit by a pitch, and Sydlowski delivered an RBI single through the left side to score Weaver for a 6-1 lead.
Bowling Green’s bullpen showed flashes. Papacek tossed three scoreless innings, allowing no hits and striking out one. Jack Angus of Eastern Michigan entered in the ninth and struck out one in a third of an inning to close the door.
Both teams have struggled this season. Bowling Green had lost four of its previous six games entering Friday, while Eastern Michigan had dropped four straight, including a 6-4 loss to Washington on Tuesday. The two teams are scheduled to meet again Saturday and Sunday in a three-game series.
Interstat’s game simulator projected a final score of Bowling Green 2, Eastern Michigan 4, and the Interstat ELO system gave the Falcons a 59.20 percent probability to win.
