Vanderbilt at Alabama

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (Interstat) — The Vanderbilt Commodores visit the Alabama Crimson Tide in a Southeastern Conference baseball game Friday afternoon at Sewell-Thomas Stadium.

The forecast calls for cloudy skies and a temperature of 67 degrees at first pitch.

Vanderbilt (27-20) enters on a one-game losing streak after falling 5-4 to Alabama on Thursday. Alabama (30-16) won that game to improve to 2-1 in its last three contests.

Vanderbilt is expected to start right-hander Connor Hamilton, who has been sharp in four recent appearances. Hamilton threw six innings of one-run ball with seven strikeouts in a 9-1 win over Middle Tennessee on April 28, and tossed two scoreless innings against Lipscomb on April 14. He also worked a scoreless inning against Eastern Kentucky on April 7 and allowed two runs in one inning at Kentucky on April 18, though he earned the win in that 8-7 decision.

Alabama is expected to start left-hander Myles Upchurch. Upchurch threw 5 1/3 scoreless innings with four strikeouts in a 2-1 win at Texas on April 19, and tossed three scoreless innings in a 3-2 win at Oklahoma on April 4. However, he surrendered three runs in five innings in an 11-4 loss at Tennessee on April 24, and allowed two runs over six innings in a 3-2 loss to Arkansas on April 12.

Interstat’s game simulator projects a 6-3 Vanderbilt victory and gives the Commodores a 52.4 percent probability of winning.

The teams play again Saturday in the second game of the three-game series. Vanderbilt’s next opponent after Saturday is Louisville at home on Tuesday. Alabama hosts Troy on Tuesday.

Vanderbilt enters Friday having won four of its previous five games before Thursday’s loss. Alabama snapped a two-game losing streak with Thursday’s win, having lost 10-0 and 11-4 at Tennessee on April 24 before beating the Volunteers 12-8 on April 23.
