VCU edges Richmond 2‑1 behind stellar pitching
RICHMOND, Va. (Interstat) — Zach Peters tossed four hitless innings with six strikeouts, leading VCU to a 2-1 victory over Richmond on Sunday afternoon at Malcolm U. Pitt Field.
The Rams (23-20, Atlantic 10) scored the game’s first run in the top of the first when a fielding error by shortstop Haught allowed Dante DeFranco to score from second. VCU added a run in the fourth on a groundout by Adelman that scored Alec Warden.
Richmond (25-19) got its only run in the third on a throwing error by pitcher Dawson Newman.
Peters, who allowed no runs and fanned six while scattering five hits over four innings, bounced back from a rough outing April 18 against George Washington. Dawson Newman and Everett Vaughan combined for five hitless relief innings, with Newman striking out two across 2 2/3 frames and Vaughan fanning one in 2 1/3.
Jackson Hinchliffe took the loss despite a strong start, allowing one earned run on two hits with one strikeout over seven innings. RJ Johnson Jr. went 3-for-3 for the Spiders, and Evan Wilson added two hits.
VCU managed only two hits on the day, Warden and DeFranco each singled, but capitalized on the errors to secure the series finale win. The Spiders left nine runners on base.
