VCU at Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. (Interstat) — VCU visits Richmond on Sunday afternoon for an Atlantic 10 baseball game at Malcolm U. Pitt Field, with the Spiders looking to complete a three-game series sweep of the Rams.

Richmond (25-18) has won the first two games of the set, taking Friday’s contest 2-1 and Saturday’s game 8-4. The Spiders enter the series finale with momentum, having won five of their last six overall. VCU (22-20) has dropped eight of its last 10 games, including six consecutive losses.

The weather forecast calls for 66-degree temperatures and cloudy skies at first pitch.

Richmond catcher RJ Rickabaugh has been a key contributor in the series. In Saturday’s win, he went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs. Over his past 10 games, Rickabaugh is batting .360 and has driven in seven runs.

VCU left fielder Nick Flores also had a strong performance Saturday, going 3-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs. However, Flores has been inconsistent; before that game, he was 0-for-14 over his previous five contests.

The Spiders have relied on timely hitting throughout the series. In Saturday’s victory, left fielder RJ Johnson Jr. went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Richmond starter Joey Giordano earned the win, allowing three earned runs over seven innings while striking out three.

VCU’s pitching struggled Saturday, as reliever Patrick Steitz allowed eight earned runs in 5 1/3 innings. Nick Frers threw 2 2/3 scoreless, hitless innings in relief.

Interstat’s game simulator projects a 7-5 Richmond victory.

The Rams face a challenging week ahead, traveling to Old Dominion on Tuesday before returning home for a three-game series against Saint Louis starting May 1.

Richmond hits the road for a three-game set at Davidson beginning May 1.
