NJIT at Albany

ALBANY, N.Y. (Interstat) — Brandon Peterson pitched six no-hit innings and NJIT broke a scoreless tie with a six-run outburst in the sixth and seventh innings to defeat Albany 6-0 on Sunday afternoon at Varsity Field.

Peterson, who had allowed four hits and two earned runs in his previous start against Maine, struck out two and did not walk a batter. He retired the first 10 Great Danes he faced before a walk and a single in the second inning, but escaped when Cooper Loyal grounded into an inning-ending double play. Anthony Anzaldi relieved Peterson to start the seventh and worked three hitless innings with four strikeouts, finishing the combined one-hitter. Albany’s only hits were Michael Maggio’s first-inning single, John Vitucci’s second-inning single, Luke Filippi’s second-inning single and Cooper Loyal’s fifth-inning double, but the Great Danes grounded into two double plays and never advanced a runner to third base.

NJIT’s offense was held in check by Albany starter Brian Cadieux, who scattered four hits over five scoreless innings with three strikeouts. The Highlanders loaded the bases with two outs in the first inning but stranded them when Jack Stead grounded into a fielder’s choice. In the second, Connor Klock singled and Ty Sallie walked, but Lorenzo Camilleri flied out to end the threat.

The game remained scoreless until the top of the sixth. After Ty Kneller relieved Cadieux, Nick Vega led off with a home run to left field to put NJIT ahead 1-0. Sheehan Connor singled and Ty Sallie singled, but Camilleri flied out to strand two runners.

The Highlanders broke the game open in the seventh. Rowin Connor was hit by a pitch, Cole Campbell singled and Austin Francis bunted for a single to load the bases with no outs. Jack Stead then singled to left-center, driving in Connor and Campbell for a 3-0 lead. Stead and Francis advanced on a passed ball, and Connor Klock followed with a three-run home run to right field, his second hit of the game, stretching the lead to 6-0.

Klock finished 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs. Vega went 2 for 5 with a home run and an RBI. Stead drove in two runs on a 1-for-5 day with a single.

Albany’s best scoring opportunity came in the second inning. Jaxon Mueller walked, Brian Guerrero struck out looking, but Vitucci singled and Filippi singled to load the bases with one out. Cooper Loyal then grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning. The Great Danes again put two runners on in the sixth when Levi McAllister singled and Mueller walked with one out, but a passed ball moved them to second and third before Brian Guerrero flied out to right.

Anzaldi retired the final nine Albany batters in order, striking out four. Jameson Walsh and Ryan Pittz each threw a scoreless inning of relief for Albany.

The win improved NJIT’s record to 14-24 overall, 6-8 in America East play, while Albany fell to 12-22 and 5-6. The Highlanders snapped a three-game losing streak and avoided a sweep after dropping the first two games of the series by scores of 1-0 and 7-5. Albany had won four of the five meetings between the teams this season entering Sunday.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Albany 4, NJIT 3, while Interstat’s ELO system had given NJIT a 52.60 percent probability to win.
