NJIT at Albany

ALBANY, N.Y. (Interstat) — The NJIT Highlanders and Albany Great Danes conclude a three-game America East series Sunday afternoon at Varsity Field. Albany took the series opener 7-5 on Friday; Saturday’s game was postponed.

NJIT (13-23) and Albany (11-21) enter the game tied for fifth in the conference standings, with both teams seeking momentum after slow starts. The weather forecast calls for 56 degrees and cloudy.

Right-hander Tade Riorden is set to start for the Highlanders. In Friday’s loss, Riorden pitched 3.1 innings of hitless relief, striking out four. Over his past six appearances, he has allowed five earned runs in 15 innings with 13 strikeouts. In two April starts, he held opponents scoreless in seven of nine innings.

Albany counters with right-hander Matthew Mariano, who earned the win Friday with five innings of one-run ball, scattering five hits and striking out three. Mariano has won three of his past four starts, posting a 1.89 ERA over 18.1 innings in that span.

Cole Campbell led NJIT’s offense Friday, going 2-for-5 with two RBIs. For Albany, John Vitucci was 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Tre Mariano drove in two runs. Albany’s lineup has produced 10 or more runs twice in the past seven games.

The Great Danes have won two of the past three meetings between the teams after dropping three of four to NJIT in a series last month.

The Interstat game simulator projects a 4-3 Albany victory.

Following Sunday’s game, NJIT hosts Fairleigh Dickinson on Wednesday before a three-game home series against Bryant. Albany hosts Marist on Tuesday before traveling to Maryland-Baltimore County for a three-game set.
