Texas at Vanderbilt
NASHVILLE (Interstat) — Dylan Volantis threw six innings of one-run ball and struck out 11 as No. 30 Texas defeated Vanderbilt 11-4 on Friday night at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen Lee Marsh Stadium.
Volantis, who won his previous start against Alabama on April 17 with six innings of two-run ball and 12 strikeouts, allowed just one earned run on three hits while walking one. He retired the first 15 Commodores in order before Mike Mancini singled to lead off the bottom of the sixth. Volantis yielded a run later in that inning on a two-out single by Chris Barczi. Aiden Cozart followed with two scoreless innings, striking out three, and Thomas Burns, Ethan Walker and Samuel Cozart combined for the final three outs without allowing a hit.
Texas improved to 31-8 overall, while Vanderbilt fell to 25-18. The Longhorns’ 14 hits included three home runs and a double from Aiden Robbins, who went 2 for 4 with two homers and three RBI. Adrian Rodriguez collected three hits in four at-bats, including a home run and three RBI. Josh Livingston added a three-run homer in the fifth, finishing 1 for 5.
The most important part of the game occurred in the top of the fifth inning, when Texas broke open a 4-0 lead with a five-run outburst. After a leadoff single by Max Pack Jr. and a stolen base, Rodriguez drove him in with a single to right center. Livingston then followed a walk to Larson and a single by Borba by crushing a three-run homer to right field, extending the lead to 8-0. The Longhorns added two more runs in the sixth on Rodriguez’s two-run homer.
Vanderbilt scored its first run in the bottom of the sixth on Barczi’s RBI single, and the Commodores cut the deficit to 9-4 in the seventh on a two-run homer by Will Reynolds and a solo shot by Mancini. But Cozart shut the door with two strikeouts in the eighth and a 1-2-3 ninth.
Robbins opened the scoring in the third with a solo homer down the left-field line. Texas added three more in the fourth on a sacrifice bunt by Borba and a two-run homer by Robbins. Vanderbilt starter Ethan Fennell lasted 1 2/3 innings before giving way to a bullpen that combined for 7 1/3 innings of three-run ball. Jacob Faulkner threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings for the Commodores, and Tristan Bristow worked 1 1/3 hitless frames.
The game was the opener of a three-game Southeastern Conference series. Vanderbilt’s Mancini finished 2 for 5 with a homer and an RBI. Reynolds drove in two runs with his seventh-inning blast.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Vanderbilt 7, Texas 6. The Interstat ELO system gave Texas a 50.60 percent probability to win.
