Miami (FL) at Florida Atlantic
BOCA RATON, Fla. (Interstat) — Packy Bradley-Cooney struck out seven over 2 2/3 hitless innings of dominant relief, and the Miami Hurricanes weathered a mid-game rally to edge the Florida Atlantic Owls 5-4 on Wednesday night at FAU Baseball Stadium.
The Hurricanes (30-11) built a five-run lead in the first two innings, then relied on a parade of relievers, headlined by Bradley-Cooney, to silence the Owls (19-21) after they clawed back within a run.
Miami struck quickly against FAU starter Juntunen. Leadoff batter Ogden walked, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on Williams’ sacrifice fly. After a walk to Sosa, Brylan West doubled down the left-field line to make it 2-0. Gabriel Milano extended the lead to 3-0 in the second inning with a solo home run to right field.
The Hurricanes added two more in the opening frame. With runners on first and third and one out, West delivered an RBI double. He later scored on a fielding error.
Florida Atlantic broke through against Miami starter TJ Coats in the fourth. The Owls loaded the bases with one out, and Leroux drew a walk to force in a run. Lipsey then reached on a fielding error by Miami second baseman Ogden, which allowed two more runs to score, cutting the deficit to 5-3.
The Owls pulled closer in the fifth. Martinez doubled, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on Small’s RBI single. That prompted Miami to turn to its bullpen, bringing in Bradley-Cooney with two on and one out. The right-hander escaped the jam by striking out Leroux and Lipsey, the latter looking, to preserve a 5-4 lead.
From there, Bradley-Cooney was untouchable. He struck out the side in the sixth and added two more strikeouts in the seventh before giving way to Jake Dorn, who worked a scoreless eighth. Lyndon Glidewell struck out two in a perfect ninth to earn the save.
The most critical juncture of the game came in the bottom of the eighth. After Dorn allowed a leadoff walk, the Owls threatened to tie or take the lead. But with one out, Collier grounded into an inning-ending 5-4-3 double play, snuffing out the rally.
Miami outhit Florida Atlantic 10-7. Milano and West each had two hits and an RBI for the Hurricanes. Carson Kimball and Reilly Witmer each threw two scoreless innings of relief for the Owls.
The win improved Miami to 2-0 against its in-state rival this season, following a 10-6 victory in Coral Gables on March 24. The Hurricanes’ bullpen, after Bradley-Cooney’s stellar outing, combined for 4 1/3 hitless innings with 11 strikeouts.
Miami opens a three-game home series against California on Friday. Florida Atlantic begins a conference series against Charlotte at home on Friday.
