Stonehill at Massachusetts
AMHERST, Mass. (Interstat) — Two teams seeking momentum will meet Wednesday when the Stonehill Skyhawks visit the Massachusetts Minutemen for a non-conference afternoon matchup at Earl Lorden Field.
First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. under cloudy skies with temperatures near 51 degrees.
Both clubs enter with sub-.500 records. Stonehill (14-20) has dropped four of its last five, including an 8-4 loss to Wagner on Sunday. Massachusetts (12-20) has lost two straight, falling 6-4 to Central Connecticut on Tuesday.
The game features pitchers looking to rebound. Stonehill is expected to start right-hander Daniel Lang, who took the loss against Wagner. Lang pitched five innings, allowing three earned runs on three hits with four strikeouts. His season has been uneven, mixing a seven-inning, two-run win at Delaware State on April 2 with shorter outings where command has escaped him.
Massachusetts will counter with right-hander Lorcan Lee, who was tagged with Tuesday’s loss in relief. Lee threw 4 2/3 innings against Central Connecticut, surrendering two earned runs on two hits. He has struggled in recent appearances, allowing five or more earned runs in three of his last four outings dating to March 31.
At the plate, Stonehill’s Nathan Kearney is coming off a 3-for-5, two-RBI performance in Sunday’s loss. For the Minutemen, outfielder Gavin O’Brien provided power in Tuesday’s defeat, going 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, Massachusetts is projected to win 6-4.
Following this contest, Stonehill begins a three-game home series against Coppin State on Friday. Massachusetts opens a road series at Ball State on Friday.
