Arizona at Oklahoma State

AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. (Interstat) — Ethan Lund pitched a complete game seven-inning masterpiece, striking out 13 and allowing only two hits, as Oklahoma State routed Arizona 13-1 in a Big 12 baseball game Friday at O’Brate Stadium.

The Cowboys, now 35-19, bounced back from a 7-4 loss to Arizona the previous day. The Wildcats slipped to 19-33.

Oklahoma State sent 10 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first inning, scoring five runs to erase an early Arizona lead. After Arizona’s Carson McEntire homered in the top of the second to cut the deficit to 5-1, the Cowboys answered with a solo shot by Kollin Ritchie in the bottom half and added two more runs to make it 8-1. The decisive blow came in the fourth inning, when Oklahoma State scored five more runs on five hits, including a solo homer by Garrett Shull and a two-run single by Aidan Meola, stretching the lead to 13-1. The game was called after seven innings under the conference’s run rule.

Lund, a right-hander, was the story on the mound. He struck out 13 batters, walked none and surrendered only a solo homer to McEntire in the second inning and a single to Brendan Lira in the third. Lund’s performance was a sharp turnaround from his previous start May 8 against Arizona State, when he allowed three earned runs over five innings.

Colin Brueggemann led the Oklahoma State offense, going 3 for 4 with a three-run home run in the first inning and a run-scoring single in the second. He finished with five RBIs. Shull went 3 for 3 with a solo homer and a walk. Smithwick was 3 for 4 with a double and two runs scored. Meola had two hits and two RBIs. Alex Conover homered in the first inning, his 14th of the season, and finished 2 for 4. Ritchie homered and walked twice.

Arizona’s offense managed only two hits — McEntire’s homer and Lira’s single. The Wildcats struck out 13 times and drew two walks. Arizona pitchers walked five batters and hit two. Benton Hickman and Evan Brandt each threw scoreless innings in relief, but the damage was done early.

The game turned decisively in the bottom of the first. After Arizona starter Jackson Kramkowski retired the first two batters, Ritchie walked, Meola struck out, but Smithwick singled to put runners at the corners. Brueggemann then crushed a 3-0 pitch down the right-field line for a three-run homer. A single, an error and a bases-loaded walk followed, and the Cowboys led 5-1 after one. They never looked back.

Oklahoma State finished with 17 hits. Arizona had two errors.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Oklahoma State 7, Arizona 2. The Cowboys entered as a 3.5-run favorite, and Interstat’s ELO system gave them a 66.70 percent probability to win.
