Oregon at UCLA

LOS ANGELES (Interstat) — Dean West’s grand slam in the bottom of the eighth inning propelled UCLA to a 9-6 victory over Oregon on Sunday afternoon at Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena, clinching the Big Ten series for the Bruins.

UCLA improved to 46-5 overall, while Oregon dropped to 36-14. The Bruins outhit the Ducks 13-8 in a game that saw several lead changes before West’s decisive blast.

Oregon struck first in the top of the first when Carter Cooney flied out, but the Ducks loaded the bases in the second and took a 1-0 lead on a single by David Smith. The Ducks added three unearned runs in the fourth inning after a passed ball and a fielding error by UCLA first baseman Jack Levu. Brayden Jaksa capitalized with a three-run homer to center field, his fourth of the season, giving Oregon a 6-1 advantage.

UCLA answered in the bottom of the sixth when shortstop Roch Cholowsky homered to left center, cutting the deficit to 6-2. The Bruins added another run on a double by AJ Gasparino that scored Jack Brennan and advanced to third on a fielding error by Oregon left fielder Brayden Jaksa, making it 6-3.

The decisive rally came in the eighth. With two outs and runners on first and second, UCLA’s Roman Martin grounded out, but Brennan singled, and Gasparino struck out. Dugger singled to right, and a pinch-hit single by Jake Espinoza scored Brennan to pull UCLA within 6-5. After Oregon reliever Thomas Bradley hit pinch-runner Cal to load the bases, West crushed a 1-0 pitch over the right-center field wall for his third home run of the season, clearing the bases and giving UCLA a 9-6 lead.

West finished 4 for 5 with a home run and four RBIs, recovering from an 0-for-5 performance in Saturday’s 9-6 loss to Oregon. The junior left fielder had gone 1 for 4 in Friday’s win and 0 for 4 with an RBI against Loyola Marymount earlier in the week.

UCLA starter Landon Stump allowed four hits and one earned run over 2 2/3 innings, striking out three. Angel Cervantes tossed two scoreless innings of relief, yielding one hit with a strikeout. Zach Strickland, Cal Randall and Easton Hawk each pitched a scoreless inning to close out the game.

Oregon starter Miles Gosztola threw 5 1/3 innings of no-hit ball before being lifted after allowing two earned runs on zero hits with nine strikeouts. Toby Twist recorded one strikeout in one-third of an inning for the Ducks. Jaksa went 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs to lead Oregon’s offense.

Cholowsky added two hits, including a home run and two RBIs, for UCLA.

The Ducks had won the series opener Saturday 9-6, while UCLA bounced back Friday with an 11-1 victory. Oregon’s next series is at home against Southern California starting Thursday, while UCLA travels to Washington for a three-game set beginning the same day.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Oregon 8, UCLA 7, while the ELO system gave UCLA a 58.50 percent probability to win. UCLA was installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus 2.5.
