Forbes’ homer lifts Arizona past Houston 6‑5 in series finale

TUCSON (Interstat) — Joe Forbes hit a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift Arizona to a 6-5 victory over Houston on Sunday afternoon at Hi Corbett Field, ending a three-game Big 12 series.

The Wildcats avoided a sweep after dropping the first two games. Arizona improved to 18-32 overall, while Houston fell to 22-29.

Houston built a 5-0 lead early, but Arizona chipped away. The Wildcats scored twice in the second inning, one on a fielder’s choice and another on an error, then added two more in the third on a sacrifice fly and a single to cut the deficit to 5-4.

Houston’s offense went quiet after the first, managing only seven hits and grounding into two double plays. Arizona tied the game in the seventh on Maddox Mihalakis’ run-scoring double before Forbes delivered his first homer.

Evan Brandt earned the win with five scoreless relief innings, allowing three hits and striking out two. Patrick Morris followed with four shutout innings. For Houston, Harrison Boushele took the loss despite no hits over 3 2/3 innings, but allowed two earned runs on walks and errors. Cash Brennan and Beau Sylvester each had two hits for Arizona.
