Connecticut at Seton Hall

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. (Interstat) — Chris Polemeni hit a grand slam in the third inning and Oliver Pudvar fired six no-hit innings as Connecticut defeated Seton Hall 7-3 Sunday afternoon at Owen T. Carroll Field to complete a Big East series sweep.

Polemeni, the Huskies’ designated hitter, finished 2 for 5 with five RBIs. His fourth-inning single drove in another run, giving him five RBIs on the day. Connecticut, which won the first two games of the series by scores of 4-3 and 13-1, improved to 30-22 overall. Seton Hall dropped to 15-28.

The game turned in the top of the third inning with the Pirates leading 2-1. Seton Hall had taken the lead in the bottom of the first on a two-run single by shortstop Nick Tomasetto. Connecticut answered in the top of the third after loading the bases with no outs. Jackson Marshall walked, Maddix Dalena singled and advanced to second on a passed ball, and Nater Wachter walked. Polemeni then drove the first pitch he saw over the left-field wall for a grand slam that put the Huskies ahead 5-2.

Connecticut added two more runs in the top of the fourth. Rob Rispoli singled, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. After Marshall walked and Dalena walked, Wachter drove in Rispoli with a sacrifice fly. Polemeni followed with an RBI single that scored Marshall, making it 7-2.

Pudvar (6.0 IP, 0 H, 2 ER, 5 K) worked around three walks and a hit batter while consistently escaping trouble. The Pirates put runners on base in the first, third and fourth innings but could not string together hits against the right-hander. Seton Hall grounded into two double plays, one in the third and one in the fourth, short-circuiting potential rallies.

Greg Shaw III relieved Pudvar to start the seventh and allowed one run over three innings. Shaw surrendered a run in the bottom of the ninth when pinch hitter Joe Marini singled, advanced on a double by Shea Grady and scored on a fielder’s choice grounder by Ryan Frontera. Grady went 3 for 5 with an RBI for Seton Hall.

Seton Hall outhit Connecticut 13-12 but stranded nine runners. Tomasetto drove in two runs for the Pirates. Anthony Belisario had two hits and two stolen bases for Connecticut, while third baseman Maddix Dalena went 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Polemeni’s grand slam was the decisive blow. It marked his first home run of the series and gave the Huskies the cushion they needed after Seton Hall’s early outburst. Connecticut’s pitching, which held the Pirates to three runs over the weekend, remained effective throughout the afternoon.

C Connecticut has won three straight games and six of its last seven. The Huskies host Northeastern on Tuesday before a three-game conference series against Villanova.

Seton Hall, which has dropped five in a row, travels to Georgetown for a three-game set beginning Thursday.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Connecticut 8, Seton Hall 3, and its ELO system gave Connecticut a 75.60 percent probability of winning the game.
