SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. (Interstat) — Connecticut goes for a three-game sweep of Seton Hall on Sunday afternoon at Owen T. Carroll Field, aiming to extend its recent dominance in the Big East series. The Huskies (29-22) have won the first two games by a combined 17-4 margin, including a 13-1 rout Saturday.
A game-time forecast of 63 degrees and rain is expected.
Fresh off a complete-game pitching performance in Saturday’s victory, Connecticut right-hander Charlie Hale is set to take the mound again on short rest. He was the winning pitcher in the 13-1 decision, allowing no hits and one earned run over 5.2 innings while striking out seven. Hale is 4-0 in his last four appearances with a 1.76 ERA over 15.1 innings, striking out 15.
The Huskies rank among the Big East leaders in scoring, averaging 6.7 runs per game. First baseman Jackson Marshall drove in four runs Saturday, going 4-for-6. Connecticut has won four of its last five games overall, with the only loss a 3-2 defeat to East Tennessee State.
Seton Hall (15-27) has lost 10 of its last 12 games. The Pirates’ offense managed just one run on five hits Saturday. Right-hander Derek Benzinger took the loss in relief in that game, allowing one earned run over 3.2 innings with four hits and two strikeouts. He has a 7.98 ERA over his last five outings.
The Pirates’ bullpen has been taxed during the series, and Seton Hall has lost 14 of its last 17 Big East games.
Connecticut won Friday’s series opener 4-3.
Projected by Interstat’s game simulator to win 8-3, the Huskies are looking to build momentum before hosting Northeastern on Tuesday. Seton Hall travels to Georgetown for a three-game series beginning Thursday.
