Hawaii at UC Davis
DAVIS, Calif. (Interstat) — Braydon Wooldridge pitched five strong innings and also served as the designated hitter to lead UC Davis to a 3-1 victory over Hawaii on Sunday afternoon at Dobbins Baseball Complex, securing the Big West series win for the Aggies.
Wooldridge allowed one run on five hits over five innings, striking out one and walking none. He also went 0 for 2 at the plate with a popup and a flyout before shifting to designated hitter after his pitching stint. The victory improved UC Davis to 26-25 overall and 16-18 in the Big West, while Hawaii dropped to 16-18 overall and 10-14 in conference play.
The game remained scoreless for the first four innings as Hawaii starter Brody Martin-Grudzielanek matched Wooldridge. Martin-Grudzielanek struck out eight over 5 2/3 innings, but allowed three earned runs despite yielding no hits — a rare line driven by walks, a hit batter and defensive mistakes.
Hawaii broke through in the top of the third. Noah Rodriguez singled, advanced to second on a single by K. Nahaku, and scored on a single to left-center by T. Shimao, giving the Warriors a 1-0 lead.
UC Davis answered in the bottom of the fifth. Lee drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Wooldridge, and scored on a single to left by Story, tying the game at 1-1.
The pivotal moment came in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, Elijah McNeal singled to left field. Mason Lerma followed with a double to left-center, driving in McNeal for the go-ahead run. Lee then singled to left, scoring Lerma and extending the lead to 3-1.
Hawaii threatened in the sixth after back-to-back singles by M. Lau Kong and D. Nushida, but J. Redding grounded into a double play. The Warriors also put two runners on in the seventh on a single and a pinch-hit single, but K. Nahaku struck out looking to end the inning. Hawaii grounded into two double plays on the day.
Martin-Grudzielanek took the loss despite his punchout total. Tsubasa Tomii threw 1 1/3 hitless innings of relief for Hawaii, and John Alkire added a scoreless eighth with one strikeout. For UC Davis, Tyler Wood tossed two hitless innings with one strikeout, Mason Lerma worked a scoreless eighth with two strikeouts, and Rowen Barnes closed the ninth with a perfect inning.
Hawaii totaled 10 hits but left runners on base in multiple innings. Rodriguez had two hits, including a double, and McNeal and Lerma each finished with two hits for the Aggies. Lerma also drove in the go-ahead run.
The series opened Friday with Hawaii winning 4-1, but UC Davis evened it Saturday with a 4-2 victory. Sunday’s result gave the Aggies their second straight win over the Warriors.
Interstat’s game simulator projected a final score of UC Davis 6, Hawaii 3. Interstat’s ELO system gave Hawaii a 64.50 percent probability to win entering the game.
