ELON, N.C. (Interstat) — Kurt Rogers pitched six no-hit innings and the College of Charleston Cougars pounded out 16 hits Saturday to defeat the Elon Phoenix 11-1 at Walter C. Latham Park, evening their Colonial Athletic Association series.

Rogers, who allowed three earned runs in five innings of a loss at UNC Wilmington a week earlier, was dominant from the start. He struck out four, walked none and did not allow a hit. The Cougars improved to 24-25 overall and 13-13 in the CAA, while Elon dropped to 19-30 and 10-16.

College of Charleston got on the board in the third inning when shortstop Will Tippett led off with a solo home run to deep left field, his sixth of the season. Dylan Johnson followed with an RBI double, scoring Cole Amman, and a throwing error by Elon shortstop Zach Hajdu allowed another run to score. Ethan Plyler added a run-scoring fielder’s choice to push the lead to 3-0.

The Cougars broke the game open in the fourth. Nick Diaz singled, then Tippett singled, and Reece Holbrook drove in Diaz with a single. Amman made it 5-0 with a run-scoring fielder’s choice. After a walk to Johnson, Alex LaCoste singled up the middle to score Amman. The Cougars led 6-0 after four innings.

In the fifth, Smith reached on a fielding error by Hajdu, then Diaz crushed his second home run of the season to left center, scoring Smith and stretching the lead to 8-0. The Cougars added three more runs in the seventh. With the bases loaded, Plyler singled up the middle to drive in two, and LaCoste drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home Tippett.

Elon’s only run came in the sixth inning, aided by two Cougar errors. With one out, Alex Akopov reached on an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error by third baseman Penfield. Alford grounded out to third, but a throwing error by LaCoste allowed Akopov to score.

Rogers earned his fourth win of the season. Kaden Myers pitched a scoreless seventh inning to finish the game. Offensively, Tippett went 3-for-4 with a home run and an RBI, Holbrook was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two stolen bases, and LaCoste was 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Diaz finished 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. Plyler drove in three runs despite going 1-for-5. For Elon, Cade Mustard pitched two scoreless innings in relief, allowing two hits, and Cole Miller faced one batter and gave up a hit but no run.

The Cougars have now won four of their last five games after taking the series opener Friday 6-5. The teams conclude the three-game set Sunday at Latham Park. College of Charleston next travels to Georgia Southern on Tuesday, while Elon visits Queens on Tuesday.

Interstat’s game simulator projected a final score of College of Charleston 5, Elon 4, and its ELO system gave the Cougars a 65.50 percent probability to win.
