Oregon at UCLA
LOS ANGELES (Interstat) — Naulivou Lauaki Jr. broke out of a prolonged slump with a three-run homer and a double, leading Oregon to a 9-6 victory over UCLA on Saturday at Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena.
The Ducks improved to 36-13 overall and 16-6 in Big Ten play, snapping a two-game losing streak. The Bruins fell to 45-5 overall and 17-5 in conference, their first series loss of the season.
Oregon trailed 5-4 entering the seventh inning. Jack Brooks drew a walk, stole second and advanced to third on a balk before scoring on a groundout by Ryan Cooney to tie the game. UCLA answered in the bottom half when shortstop Roch Cholowsky hit his second home run of the game, a solo shot to center field, putting the Bruins ahead 6-5.
The Ducks responded with a four-run eighth inning, taking the lead for good. Aiden Laya singled, and Mason Molony doubled to right field, driving in Laya to tie the game. After a walk to Gavin Miranda, Lauaki reached on a fielding error by UCLA second baseman, loading the bases. Brooks then cleared the bases with a double to left-center, scoring three unearned runs and giving the Ducks a 9-6 advantage.
Oregon’s bullpen held the Bruins scoreless over the final two innings. Tanner Bradley and Cal Scolari combined for 4.2 innings of one-hit relief, striking out seven. Scolari pitched 2.1 innings, allowing one earned run with six strikeouts. Bradley worked 2.1 innings, giving up no hits and striking out one.
Lauaki, who entered the game hitless in his previous 10 at-bats, went 2 for 4 with a three-run homer in the second inning that tied the game at 4-4 after UCLA had jumped ahead 4-0 in the first. He also doubled in the fourth.
Cholowsky led the Bruins with a 2-for-5 day, hitting two solo home runs and driving in two runs. Center fielder Will Gasparino also homered, finishing 2 for 4 with two RBIs. UCLA starter Michael Barnett lasted 4.1 innings, allowing five hits and four earned runs with three strikeouts.
Oregon starter Collin Clarke threw 4.1 innings, surrendering five earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts. The Ducks managed nine hits, while the Bruins had seven.
The game marked the second of a three-game series, following UCLA’s 11-1 win Friday. Oregon avoided a series loss and set up a rubber match Sunday.
Lauaki’s performance was a sharp turnaround from recent games. He went 0 for 2 in Friday’s loss, 0 for 4 in each of two games at Washington on May 2 and 3, and had his last multi-hit game on May 1, when he went 3 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs against the Huskies.
Jack Brooks drove in three runs for the Ducks, including the decisive double in the eighth. He also stole two bases. Oregon’s other runs came on a sacrifice fly by Cooney in the seventh and Molony’s RBI double in the eighth.
UCLA’s Ian May pitched 1.2 scoreless innings in relief, striking out three. Justin Lee struck out three in a scoreless ninth. The Bruins left seven runners on base.
Interstat’s game simulator projected a final score of Oregon 8, UCLA 7. Interstat’s ELO system gave UCLA a 58.50 percent probability to win. The Bruins were installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-2.5.
