Oregon at UCLA

LOS ANGELES (Interstat) — Oregon visits UCLA on Saturday, May 9, in a Big Ten matchup at Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. under cloudy skies with a game-time temperature of 72 degrees.

The Bruins (44-4 overall) enter with one of the nation’s best records, while the Ducks (35-12) look to rebound from a 6-1 loss to UCLA in Friday’s series opener. UCLA has won four straight overall.

Oregon will likely turn to right-hander Miles Gosztola (0-1 in his most recent outing). In a 9-5 loss at Washington on May 3, Gosztola worked 4 2/3 innings, allowing no hits but two earned runs with four strikeouts. In his prior three appearances — all Oregon wins — he combined for 11 2/3 innings, allowing three hits and three earned runs while striking out 13. His season includes a six-inning, seven-strikeout performance against Penn State on April 26.

UCLA is projected to counter with right-hander Angel Cervantes (1-0 in his past four appearances). On May 5, he threw two scoreless innings with two strikeouts in an 8-4 win at Loyola Marymount. In his prior three outings — two wins and a loss — he totaled eight innings, allowing seven hits and two earned runs with seven strikeouts. His most extensive start came April 28 at UC Santa Barbara, where he pitched five innings, allowing one run and three strikeouts.

The Bruins hold a 58.5% win probability according to Interstat’s ELO system. Interstat’s simulator projects an 8-7 Oregon victory.

Oregon is one game into a four-game road trip. After Saturday, the Ducks play UCLA again Sunday before returning home to host Southern California for three games starting May 14.

UCLA closes its three-game series with Oregon on Sunday, then travels to Washington for a three-game series beginning May 14.

The Ducks’ last win came April 28, a 4-3 victory over Gonzaga. UCLA’s only recent blemish was a 9-6 loss to Sacramento State on April 26.
