Saint John`s at Villanova

PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. (Interstat) — Evan Chaffee pitched six no-hit innings and Dylan Fitzsimmons drove in three runs as Saint John’s Red Storm defeated the Villanova Wildcats 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at Villanova Ballpark at Plymouth.

Chaffee, a right-hander, struck out eight and walked one over six scoreless frames, retiring the first 10 batters he faced. He allowed only a leadoff walk in the fourth inning and a pair of singles in the fifth, but both runners were erased on a pickoff and a groundout. Jack Nestler followed with two hitless innings and Evan Hoeckele closed with a perfect ninth, striking out two to complete a combined three-hit shutout.

The Red Storm broke a scoreless tie in the top of the seventh. Will Cowan singled with two outs, stole second and scored on Fitzsimmons’ single up the middle. In the ninth, with the score still 1-0, Fitzsimmons provided the decisive blow. After a two-out error extended the inning, he crushed a two-run home run to right field, scoring Cowan again and giving Saint John’s a three-run cushion.

Fitzsimmons finished 2-for-4 with the homer and three RBIs. Cristian Bernardini doubled, Shaun McMillan doubled, and Adam Agresti singled for Saint John’s, which collected seven hits. Jack Kelley took the tough-luck loss for Villanova, allowing one earned run on five hits over seven innings while striking out three. He retired 12 straight batters at one point. Graham Moore tossed two scoreless innings of relief.

Villanova’s best scoring chance came in the bottom of the first. Collin Quintano and Michael Whooley singled, and a walk loaded the bases with two outs, but Chaffee struck out Larry Hotaling to end the threat. The Wildcats stranded two more runners in the fourth and another in the sixth. Villanova managed five hits, including a single from Jack Roventini, who also stole a base.

The win improved Saint John’s to 28-22 overall and gave the Red Storm a two-game sweep in the Big East series after an 8-1 victory Friday. Villanova dropped to 17-28. The teams conclude the three-game set Sunday.

Interstat’s game simulator projected a 7-5 Saint John’s victory, and its ELO system gave the Red Storm a 71.20 percent probability to win.
